Marshall Fielding, singer, musician, entertainer, has survived a grueling tour of south-east Asia, and returns to face another huge concert in Sydney. Sitting next to each other on the plane to Australia, Marsh and Shann begin a tentative conversation. They open up to each other; both seem to have reached one of life’s significant crossroads. Which way should each of them go – left, right or straight across? After arriving in Sydney, Shann goes home to the lovely old Federation house, and begins to rebuild her small family. Marsh, up-tight about his coming performance, finds his extensive mansion a hollow refuge. At the concert Shann discovers a totally altered Marsh, an exciting, riveting performer, and realizes she is attracted to him. On an impulse Marsh invites her to his house, where Shann discovers the real Marsh, hidden behind the façade of the entertainer, and Marsh finds a woman different to the one on the plane; one with whom he can share his problems. Shann and Marsh begin a close friendship. But the relationship has to conform to Marsh’s paranoia about his personal space; cope with his vengeful ex-girlfriend; and overcome Shann’s reluctance to commit to a new liaison. Circumstances prove to be intimidating. But fate takes an unexpected hand. Can chance intervene to bring them to the crossroads together?
