It is now the year 3146, thirty years since the last voyage of the SS Hayden. It has been over a decade since the mysterious disappearance of the Saltic from the Andromeda Galaxy. The Saltic had played a major part in that last voyage. Since the disappearance, the Romani have been consolidating their position in Andromeda and are allying themselves with other sentient species there. If the Saltic turn up in Andromeda again, the Romani will be ready for them. Christopher Slone is now the second Consul of the Republic of Nova Romae and he has spent the last decade keeping an eye on the activities of the corporations between earth and the core of the Milky Way. They have been embroiled in a war that has lasted over a decade and seems to have no end in sight. The war was over the remnants of the Brandenburger Corporation, which was destroyed when they attempted to ally themselves with the vermiform race known as the Saltic. They were large worm-like aliens, who considered all other sentients in both galaxies to be their inferiors and thought nothing of using them as resources to fill their needs. They had no sympathy for others and they could not be reasoned with. The Romani used a fleet of spy freighters to keep an eye on things within all of the corporations, since they were the castoffs of those corporations and had entered corporate space thirty years before to conquer the very corporations who had rejected them. This desire was replaced by a need to unite against a common enemy, the Saltic. Reports from the spy freighters indicated that something was changing in corporate space that would leave the corporations weak, should the Saltic suddenly reappear…
