Sam Shepard embodied an American ideal: a successful actor and acclaimed writer with a compelling cowboy persona. A prolific and highly respected playwright, his accolades include a Pulitzer Prize and ten Obie Awards, along with Oscar, Tony, and Emmy nominations.
