I was headed upstate to spend an entire week with my new love. Not having much money, I rented the cheapest vehicle I could find. Adhering to Murphy's Law—whatever can go wrong, will go wrong—the car stops running only a few miles from my destination. After standing in the rain and cold for what seemed a hundred years, an old woman in an old and ominous car stops to offer me a ride.
