Vier vrienden van Harvard bevinden zich in het centrum van deze machtsstrijd. Ze beseffen allen dat het falen van de lancering van de Explorer rampzalige gevolgen voor de VS zal hebben.
Een man ontwaakt op de vloer in de toiletten van het station van Washington D.C. Hij heeft geen benul hoe hij daar verzeild is geraakt, hij herinnert zich niet waar hij woont en weet zelfs niet meer hoe hij heet.
