Absolutely Thrilling

Love the 2nd book as much as the 1st one!!! I was hooked from the 1st and now have to finish the series!!

"Every ounce of moisture dried from my throat"

I've read three series by this author now, and I have loved them all but wow I am tired of hearing that phrase uttered over and over again as a placeholder for surprise. It appears in every possible formation of the sentence and constantly throughout all the books. That being said, it's one of few complaints I have. The only other complaint I have is this; Mira felt like a pushover to me. Lydia was better, but just kind of ended up shrugging and dealing with whatever happened with some sass included. But Cora, Cora is my GIRL! I was on BOARD with how she did NOT take s*** from Hades after she got some power under the hood and I was a happy camper. I was literally rolling my eyes over and over in the scene where she was about to drink the shot glass before, but she has come a LONG way from that. THAT BEING SAID, it seems like the author swung from one end of the spectrum to the other. She borderlines on belligerent in her insistence for Hades to repeat the same information he's trying to convey in another way or for him to apparently be able to time travel into the past and think of every possible scenario and present it to her before she makes any choices, ever. She throws a LOT of blame at his feet, and while most of it is entirely deserved and I loved her "take no crap" attitude with everyone around her that was betraying her, she went a touch too far in this installment of the series. I mean, the guy was trying to apologize in so many ways, and yeah he was being a stubborn fool because he didn't "SAY THE WORDS", but she just wouldn't give it up even after he did say he was sorry. She is the epitome of the nagging wife. Then she tells him she wants to know what he's thinking and about his past with Persephone but when he opens up to him, she gets angry with him about it and ices him out. Don't talk about such things if it's gonna make you mad, girl, especially when your man is trying to do better. She just continually dredges up things that this guy can't change, whether they be events from 5 minutes or 500 years ago, and it gets rather annoying after listening to her bicker with him over the semantics of an apology for 2 hours. However, I want the record to show that I SERIOUSLY love this version of the heroine, the version that says what she thinks and doesn't sugarcoat things for the men in her life just to soothe their fragile egos or because she gives up on the verbal battle before its' begun. I hope people understand what I mean when I refer to Cora being so stubborn, it's just annoying when she's already victorious and knows she's won, but keeps the conflict going. Anyway, now that I've said my peace with regard to complaints, I have to give kudos on some of the best writing I've come across in a while. It made me laugh, smile, frown, feel sad, among many other emotions I haven't felt while listening to a book in a hot minute. I wanted to root for Cora and understood the weird conflicting feelings she had, and felt that womanly empathy that we get when we see a female acting kinda whacky and impulsive and erratic but also strangely logical in a weird way that only we can understand. The whole two bodies one soul deal; yeah, that's a mindbender, and I can't even imagine the weird emotions that one would bring up. But the author carries on with the character development beautifully, bringing us closer and closer with Cora and Hades as we begin to see who they really are without the outside influences pushing them to be their best/worst/most sheltered versions of themselves. I love this series so far and I knew it would probably be my favorite because Hades intrigued me from the start and I love the Hades/Persephone story and the darker romances (let's face it, Mira and Valentine look like puppy love with their mild, one-time spanking that Valentine feels totally ashamed about in comparison to these two and their foot fetish kinks). The author stepped out of her comfort zone on this one, and it shows. She could have created a third series and just wrapped it up nicely with a bow and a reasonably interesting retelling of the Hades/Persephone tale, but she went so far above and beyond that now that I know not what to think! I can't even tell who is friend or foe anymore, and I thought that the narrative of the original tale would tell me that but now I'm not so sure! I absolutely ADORE that she's keeping us in suspense this way and not just retelling the same story again but switching it up with some really interesting and unique changes that she's seamlessly integrated into the plot of the original tale. Bravo, Ms. Klaus, bravo.

Not the best

The main character Cora/Persephone is nerve racking. She doesn't seem to be smart at all. I guess the female lead wasn't supposed to be strong or intelligent.
