On June 28, 2001, a shortwave operator in the Arizona high desert told his listeners a major attack was coming, and that the man blamed for it would be Osama bin Laden. Seventy-five days later the towers fell and the name crossed every network before noon. The recording kept its date.

William Cooper had read the files most citizens never see. Aboard a Navy intelligence briefing team above Pearl Harbor, a classified folder handed him the secret government, the recovered craft, the Majestic operation, and the alien material he would later go on the air and call a lie. He wrote Behold a Pale Horse, the underground book that moved through gun shows, barracks, and cell blocks and never went out of print. He filmed Waco through his own camera. He named Oklahoma City in his own voice.

Then the warrants came. A tax count. A loan application. Enough to make him a fugitive, not enough to explain the aircraft over his house or the men who studied his road.

On a hill in Eagar, they came for him after dark, in an unmarked truck, with the stereo up.
