Inherited Thinking
Let’s take a closer look.
Imagine you grow up being told: go to school, get a degree, find a good job, marry, have children, build a reputation, and live a respectable life. That’s the script. It’s handed to you, and most people never question it.
You follow the plan, but you never stop to ask: Is this truly what I want?
How much thought have I given to this path?
Most of what we call “goals” are not self-created — they are inherited. Handed down from family, culture, religion, or society. And so, even when we think we are choosing, we are simply repeating.
Take something as personal as choosing a life partner. Many of us think we know what we want — slim, tall, dark, fair, educated, godly, respectful, perhaps from the same tribe or culture. But where did those preferences come from? Did we truly think them through?
Often, they were shaped by what we’ve been told is desirable. And when a different kind of person comes along — someone who doesn’t fit that mental checklist — we dismiss them without thinking.
Then, imagine meeting someone at a family gathering — polite, respectable, well-connected. Your uncle approves, your friends are impressed, and soon you convince yourself she’s “the one.” You begin a relationship, not out of deep thought or conviction, but because it fits the script.
Years later, you wake up beside that person and realize: I never truly thought about this. I just went along.
That is how most lives are lived — on autopilot, following the easiest and most socially approved route.

Complex psychological principles are broken down in a way that feels both accessible and meaningful. Each chapter leaves you thinking differently about the world around you—and questioning assumptions you didn’t even know you had.
I especially appreciated the practical takeaways. Rather than simply exposing the problem, the author offers strategies for recognizing and resisting unhelpful forms of conformity, encouraging readers to think more independently and act with greater intention.
Overall, Conformity Unmasked is a thought-provoking, timely, and transformative read. I highly recommend it to anyone interested in psychology, social dynamics, or personal growth.
