We live in troubled and dangerous times.

It has been a long time since there have been as many ideas and events in our world causing fear and anxiety as there are today. But one thing, in any event, is clear, and that is the duty of Christians to search more diligently than ever the prophetic Scriptures. Do not be like the Jews at the first advent who were blind to the hand of God and the fulfillment of His purposes in all that was going on in the world.

Let us instead remember that the word of prophecy is given to be "a light that shineth in a dark place, until the day dawn, and the day star arise" (2 Peter 1:19). Let us walk in that light. Let us search "what, or what manner of time the Spirit of Christ which was in them [the prophets] did signify, when it testified beforehand the sufferings of Christ, and the glory that should follow" (1 Peter 1:11). Let us compare prophecies fulfilled with prophecies unfulfilled and attempt to make the one illustrate the other. Let us strive, above all, to obtain clear views of the things we should be expecting, both in the church and the world, before the end comes and time will be no more.

About the Author

John Charles Ryle (1816-1900) graduated from Eton and Oxford and then pursued a career in politics, but due to lack of funds, he entered the clergy of the Church of England. He was a contemporary of Spurgeon, Moody, Mueller, and Taylor and read the great theologians like Wesley, Bunyan, Knox, Calvin, and Luther. These all influenced Ryle’s understanding and theology.

Ryle began his writing career with a tract following the Great Yarmouth suspension bridge tragedy, where more than a hundred people drowned. He gained a reputation for straightforward preaching and evangelism. He travelled, preached, and wrote more than 300 pamphlets, tracts, and books, including Expository Thoughts on the Gospels, Principles for Churchmen, and Christian Leaders of the Eighteenth Century. Ryle used the royalties from his writing to pay his father’s debts, but he also felt indebted to that ruin for changing the direction of his life. He was recommended by Prime Minister Benjamin Disraeli to be Bishop of Liverpool where he ended his career in 1900.

Insightful, but not Ryle's best work.

J. C. Ryle is consistently solid, Saethon Williams is always a hit. The material and narrator are a perfect marriage. This isn't Ryle's best work, but it doesn't come without insights. I appreciated his treatment of the Jews, perhaps the best I've ever encountered. To truly understand the gospel, one must grasp this knowledge. Chapter 5 alone made this title worth it.

I also love the idea presented that we are sent into the wilderness to discover our own emptiness.

I can’t wait to read more of JC Ryle

This book came highly recommended to me and I can agree with that recommendation.
