“An excellent read….Concrete evidence of a master crime writer still at the top of his game.”
—Russel D. McLean, author of The Good Son

“The reigning King Daddy of crime writers” (Seattle Times), Elmore Leonard first introduced quick-triggered legendary lawman Carl Webster in the New York Times bestseller, The Hot Kid, and brought him back for an encore Up in Honey’s Room. In Comfort to the Enemy and Other Carl Webster Stories, the loose cannon U.S. marshal struts his stuff once more in three electrifying new tales. Comfort to the Enemy is more indisputable proof that Elmore Leonard is indeed, as Dennis Lehane (Mystic River, Shutter Island) puts it, “The greatest crime writer who ever lived.”

I thought this little collection with the title novella as its showpiece was superb. A great period piece set in that Leonard sweet-spot between his Westerns and more modern crime novels, this one set in early 20th century and has the origin story of “The Hot Kid”, Carl Webster.

Vintage Leonard in every way and well read by Josh Clark. I like how he does voices of different characters.

Highly recommended

What made the experience of listening to Comfort to the Enemy and Other Carl Webster Stories the most enjoyable?

Josh Clark narration.

What other book might you compare Comfort to the Enemy and Other Carl Webster Stories to and why?

Forty Lashes Less One - another Elmore Leonard Western. I've listened a few times all the way through, and it never seems to get old, just funnier!

What does Josh Clark bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

His reading of the character dialogue is epic. Extremely talented.

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

Made me laugh out loud a bunch of times.

Perfect narrator for Westerns

Elmore Leonard develops his characters by their actions, conversations, clothing, small but telling details. This book of short stories is a continuous narrative with a minimum of introspection , violence that we know is deserved, and good humour throughout

Too Funny..great characters

I did enjoy the stories. Leonard is consistantly engrosing. Clark is an excellent narrator, but his voice is too hushed. I couldn't raise the volume on my iPod loud enough to listen in a public setting. However, I do recommend this listen as long as you are listening at home.
