Why do current medical guidelines insist that cosleeping is unsafe? What is the difference between SIDS and SUID, and are they related to cosleeping? What should parents do to make a safe sleep space for their infant? If a family chooses to cosleep, how should they respond to reproach from friends, family, or medical professionals? In Safe Infant Sleep, the world's authority on cosleeping breaks down the complicated political and social aspects of sleep safety, exposes common misconceptions, and compares current recommendations to hard science.

Resumen del Editor
Comfort the kid...or let her cry it out? Listen to your instincts...or ignore them? Your heart tells you that cuddling your baby is much, much better than "Ferberizing". This book explains why.
It's 2 a.m., and your baby is wailing. You're tired, frustrated, and overwhelmed.
Do you heed your friends' advice and let the baby cry it out, hoping he'll self-soothe and learn that he doesn't need you in the middle of the night?
Or, do you listen to your deepest instincts, go to the child, and comfort her until she returns to sleep?
In this eye-opening manifesto, pediatric sleep specialists Eliot S. Katz and Carolyn D'Ambrosio explore the history of the "cry it out" industry and the medicalization of perfectly normal infant sleep patterns. They explain how the demands of modern society encourage parents to value uninterrupted sleep over their baby's needs, and to ignore important nighttime opportunities for parent-child bonding.
Comfort the Kid! also provides answers to the many questions that keep parents awake at night: Should my baby sleep in his own room, separated from his parents? (No.) Will I spoil my baby by picking her up when she cries? (No.) Will comforting my infant when he cries make him manipulative and demanding? (No.) Do the words that I use to describe my child become self-fulfilling prophecies? (Maybe.)
Filled with useful tips and safe sleep practices, parent-infant communication, family rhythms, and tempos, Comfort the Kid! emphasizes the golden rule of parenting. Comforting your crying infant results in less stress and better sleep for both you and your baby.
From Introduction:
Infancy is a challenging passage during which parents draw upon talents, insights, and stamina that they never knew they had. It is also a time to acquire a skill set and strategy that will be helpful for the demands ahead. Our hope is that a full understanding of the underlying evolutionary, biological, and cultural determinants governing infant sleep will ease this process. Knowing the benefits of Comfort the Kid! will make sleepless nights a bit less distressing and perhaps even enjoyable. A few years from now, you will remember these interactions fondly.
Praise for Comfort the Kid!:
"An innovative approach to helping infants and their families obtain healthy sleep through an understanding of normal infant behavior and the importance of a nurturing parent-child relationship. Highly recommended for all new parents." (Laura Sterni, MD, director, Johns Hopkins Pediatric Sleep Center)
"in this remarkable book, Doctors Katz and D'Ambrosio challenge many of the currently accepted tenets regarding infant sleep and direct parents to behaviors that both maximize sleep quality and optimize bonding with the infant." (David White, MD, past president, American Academy of Sleep Medicine)
"The authors take the reader through the reasoning for why letting an infant "cry it out" is not a good approach for either the parent's or the infant's health. Using quotes, anecdotes, and science, the authors discuss evolution, normal sleep, and infant development to assist parents in creating an optimal sleeping strategy for them and their children." (Nancy Collop, MD, past president, American Academy of Sleep Medicine)
Doctors Katz and D'Ambrosio cogently discuss why comforting crying infants, co-sleeping, and other practices that promote bonding between infant and parents will eventually result in less stress and better sleep for both." (Stuart Quan, MD, past president, American Academy of Sleep Medicine)

From birth, when babies' fingers instinctively cling to those of adults, their bodies and brains seek an intimate connection - a bond made possible by empathy, the remarkable ability to love and to share the feelings of others. In this unforgettable book, award-winning science journalist Maia Szalavitz and renowned child psychiatrist Bruce D. Perry explain how empathy develops, why it is essential both to human happiness and for a functional society, and how it is threatened in a modern world.

Should you really read to your baby? Can teaching a baby sign language boost IQ? Should you pipe classical music into the nursery? Dr. Jill Stamm translates the latest neuroscience findings into clear explanations and practical suggestions, demonstrating the importance of the simple ways you interact with your child every day. It isn't the right edutainment that nurtures an infant's brain. It is as simple as attention, bonding, and communication, and it's within every parent's ability to provide.

Historia
Mayim Bialik was the child star of the popular 1990s TV sitcom Blossom, but she definitely didn't follow the typical child-star trajectory. Instead, Mayim got her Ph.D. in neuroscience from UCLA, married her college sweetheart, and had two kids. Mayim then did what many new moms do - she read a lot of books, talked with other parents, and she soon started questioning a lot of the conventional wisdom she heard about the "right" way to raise a child. That's when she turned to attachment parenting.

Sleep is one of the most important but least understood aspects of our life, wellness, and longevity. Until very recently, science had no answer to the question of why we sleep, or what good it served, or why we suffer such devastating health consequences when we don't sleep. Compared to the other basic drives in life - eating, drinking, and reproducing - the purpose of sleep remained elusive.

Makes sense!
I really enjoyed this book which was recommended to me by my sister who works with Dr Katz. I honestly thought I would do the sleep training method (being a busy parent myself) and I’m glad I listened to this before attempting to do so. The biological effects and stress induced by “cry it out” and the reasons for a baby’s awakening at night all made me steer away from this method and instead implement “comfort the kid” (even though it wasn’t easy but understanding the awakenings as being normal is helpful). I think my main fear of “comfort the kid” approach was the myth that was imbedded in my mind from society being that this method would lead to spoiled kids and being independent in the future (while this book actually addresses this and mentions that in infancy, there is no ‘over spoiling’ of babies, and that comforting them actually builds their confidence to become independent in the future by solidifying their sense of security). I’m hopeful!

I can't praise this book enough!
This book does an excellent job at explaining the normal sleep behaviors of infants and emphasizes the importance of nurturing the sacred bond you have with your infant. I love that Doctors Katz and D’Ambrosio included references and evidence-based information for their recommendations.
The lessons from this book are very clear and concise. It's so common to think that you are doing everything wrong as a parent and feel overwhelmed/guilty, but all you have to do is follow your instincts....This book is really such a breath of fresh air!!!!
The audio was very easy to follow and I finished it within a few days, I also purchased the book and have personally recommended it to all expecting/new parents I’ve come in contact with since reading.
