Finally, with Operation Babylift—the dramatic evacuation of 2,000 children during the fall of Saigon—the book’s special cast of stewardesses unites to play an extraordinary role on the world stage.

Rather dull

The history especially women’s history was very interesting. Many of the stories seemed like filler and made the book tedious and dull to me

X-Flight Attendant

I worked for World Airways beginning in 1966 and continued to work in this profession for the next 17 years, left the job in 1982. This book brought back memories of Vietnam flights, wounded soldiers, and the places we flew. I had so many adventures, some good, some not so good, but all part of the experience. When I took my first flight we were weighed in, had to remain within 5pounds of our hiring weight, if we were not we were sent home until the weight was lost, had to be single with no children, you were forced to retire at age 30, then the union came in and everything changed for the better. This book covered a lot of what we went through in those early days, well done! Overall it was a wonderful experience and I am a different and better person because of it, I totally enjoyed the book as it mirror’s my own experience. I was also an RN and worked in that profession until I retired 2 years ago, thanks for the interesting read!

Informative

Intriguing insight on the brief history of airline stewardesses in the 60’s and 70’s, told from the point of view of three very different women. Lovely narration.

Feminism & Vietnam in a stewardess story

I thought this might be a little fluffy & I expected there would be a lot of tales of sexism (which there were). However, I did not expect the prominent themes feminism & antiwar/cost of war interwoven so much into the story. I appreciated that these women were doing what they could to advance the lot of women in ways that have been underappreciated. I expected tales of makeup, weigh ins & leering men. I appreciated the women who wanted adventure, freedom & multicultural experiences and just to be able to wear pants on their layovers. I appreciated the women's care & compassion for the soldiers trapped in the nightmare of Vietnam

Hard to listen to that narator

I had to slow down the voice speed of the narrator. it was too fast sounded like a robot. also some chapters I just skipped. Some information was really interesting but lots of it is boring. Also the story itself is not that catchy. I stopped at chapter 5. This is the case when the graphic part (the book cover) is so much better than the book itself. Definitely don't change the book by its cover.

Not what I was expecting…

So I ended up liking this book. It was very interesting but it was not what I thought it was going to be about. It’s topic kind of shifted around. It was about:
1. The evolution of the first stewardesses with their sex, martial status, age, race, height, weight and beauty requirements to today’s flight attendant.
2. The Vietnam war and the role commercial and contract air carriers played. Also the protests about the war.
3. Feminist movement and the fight for equal opportunity for women in the workplace.
4. The stories of 4+ stewardesses
5. The history of PanAm (lite)

The beginning of the book was slow for me but once the author wove all these themes together (say 25% of the way in) then it got very interesting. Overall I really did enjoy.

Read or Listen?

This is a wonderful historical book with tons of factual data. I would love to follow the audio and text but I don't know how.

Such strong women I didn’t know about. Just WOW!

I learned so much about the effects of Vietnam and challenges of our flight crews. Bless your courage!
