What does it mean to follow Jesus? Has the West's hyper-individuality co-opted the concept of discipleship? Come and Die asserts that in many Christian circles, the idea of salvation has been subtly reshaped into a pathway for achieving personal comfort, material success, and superficial desires, rather than the radical means of meeting mankind’s deepest and most desperate need: reconciliation with God. This distortion has produced a shallow faith that promises prosperity but avoids the cross. In contrast, Come and Die embraces one of Scripture’s most profound paradoxes: real life, true joy, and authentic flourishing are found only on the other side of death—dying to self, crucifying pride, surrendering autonomy, and taking up the call to follow Jesus wherever He leads. To follow Him is not to gain the world but to lose it, and in that loss discover the incomparable treasure of life with God.

I bought the book the day it was shared in Sunday Service at TFH. It was the title and the cover that provoked the soul’s curiosity. I’ve witnessed Pastor Jake facilitate some amazing sermons and I wanted to read what he had to say. I got thru the first chapter and there it sat on my shelf gathering dust. It wasn’t the content or the way it was written…it was the need to make space for it in a busy mom’s schedule and to learn to embrace God’s timing, trusting it’s unfolding. When it popped up in my audible, it was a blessing! I finished it in a day!! I recommend listening to find the gold nuggets contained within the word, as Jake shares it. I found myself wishing it contained more personal stories or more of the personality that comes thru Jake on stage. This isn’t meant to be criticism, rather an acceptance and an encouragement, to explore more of the sermons of the pastor that is learning to live it, as he pours parts of himself into it. It is truly a page by page activation, not meant to be reviewed in a moment, but rather received by the spirit, and consumed again and again.
