After the Civil War, Americans moved west. Colorado was where the great plains met the Rocky Mountains. Denver was a boom town because the railroad brought men and women from the east. After the war, slaves were freed in the southern states, but they were still not free. Vagrancy laws provided free prison labor for the planters. Moses Gunn decided to steal his master's wagon and run. He took Amelia with him. After hiding among the outer banks, he and Amelia made their way west seeking freedom. Jake and Moses threw in together when renegades kidnapped Amelia. Aided by Iron Knife from Soaring Eagle's tribe, the three rescuers rode toward a final showdown.
