Tijdens de Tweede Wereldoorlog planden krijgsgevangen gemaakte geallieerde officieren een reeks gedurfde ontsnappingen uit kamp Colditz, een grimmig gotisch kasteel dat in nazi-Duitsland als gevangenis werd gebruikt. Colditz gold destijds als behoorlijk escape-proof: het was een vesting met dikke kasteelmuren, een gesloten binnenplaats, gelegen op een rots, met meer bewakers dan gevangenen en de politie en de bevolking van de dorpen eromheen waren alert op ontsnappers. Kortom: je kon er niet makkelijk weg. Dat was de reden dat de meest vluchtgevaarlijke officieren van de geallieerden er gedetineerd waren, die honderden pogingen deden om te ontsnappen – meer dan uit enig ander Duits kamp.
De geschiedenis van Colditz is vooral bekend door de spannende televisieserie van de bbc, die ook in Nederland te zien was. In dit boek vertelt Macintyre in detail de bijzonderste ontsnappingsverhalen – er werd bijvoorbeeld in het geheim een zweefvliegtuig gebouwd op zolder. Daarnaast laat hij zien hoe het dagelijks leven zich voltrok; de gevangenispopulatie was divers, het was een mini-maatschappij met kleurrijke types onder zowel de nazi's als de geallieerden.
