When Mackenzie Stuart moves to an isolated island off the coast of the Scottish Outer Hebrides, he hoped Starcrest would be a good place for him to recover from the psychological repercussions of a painful divorce.

For a while, it is perfect for his needs. Peaceful, quiet, and far away from his troubles. However, one day he glimpses what he assumes is a naked toddler in the woods. Fearing for the child, he follows, only to find it has vanished. Mack informs the authorities and a search-and-rescue mission begins.

This is the start of events which will eventually threaten Mack’s life. Starcrest Island holds a deadly secret. One which Mack is about to discover.

Soooo creepy

Don’t listen to in the dark or durning a storm. I did this and soo wished I didn’t. I did not sleep that night. The creatures darts that have babies in them are so creepy. Gives me shivers. Over all it was a good suspenseful book.

Cloven

I liked this little horror book!It had so much smushed into two hours.Neil White was the perfect narrator.I was given this book by the narrator,author or publisher free for an honest review.

A nice little horror story!

I usually listen to long novels, but this short tale was a lovely little treat! The author did a nice job weaving the story together. All the details you need without a lot of unnecessary fluff. The narration is well done, adding an extra layer to the story. Reminded me of something you might see on tales from the crypt. I really enjoyed it.

Good short horror story

This was a good short horror story. It has a creepiness in just the right spots and will give you nightmares, especially if you listen to it at bedtime. The narrator has done a wonderful job.

This is a very well written and narrated tale with a pleasantly unexpected twist at the end.

A Great Listen! Thrilling, Chilling & Suspenseful!

This is a great short story! It sends chills up your spine and brings you to the edge of your seat! It is well written and well told, the storylines are interesting and captivating. After a painful divorce and shunning from his children Mack moves to an isolated island to recover. It is a quiet and peaceful place, just him and nature, so he thinks. After cutting wood for his fire he catches a glimpse our of the corner of his eye of what he thought was a naked toddler who he chased after but it ran and disappeared into the trees. Not sure of his sighting he still radioed it in to the police who are on Mannin Island. A search party came to the Island but no one was found and nothing was amiss. The search party left him and he returned to his lonely living. When preparing his garden he saw odd sets of footprints, cloven like hooves. He also has a creepy feeling that he is being watch. At night he hears banging on his front porch, one of his planted is moved to under his window, was it so someone short could look in? The story gets creepier and creepier, has you wondering what or who is out there. Then one stormy night he realized what he thought was a toddler is really a pale skinned creature with a humanoid head. No radio contact in his home he attempt to get to his boat to call for help. It all goes down hill from there, he is attacked and the creatures attempt to drag him away. Escaping from them he gets himself back to his home but the creatures are not done with him. And he his body is being taken over by growths has he become a host for these creatures? What be comes of them in the end. Kady Monroe, thank you for this fascinating & creepy horror story.

I listened to the Audible edition, Neil White is a wonderful narrator & voice performer. He brings the characters to life, gives them heart and emotion. He adds the perfect dramatic flair to his performance which enhances this great story another level. He is an entertaining storyteller and a pleasure to listen to!

Don't sequester yourself on a small private island

Cloven by Kady Monroe is a creepy little novella about a man, Mack, who has sequestered himself on a small Scottish island after a painful betrayal and brutal divorce. He's looking for solitude, but instead finds scrutiny from his fellow islanders and creepy (mostly) unseen things going bump in the night.

After several almost encounters with these curious creatures who leave small cloven footprints, Mack starts to doubt his sanity. When he is finally attacked, things go south quickly. The physical pain, the isolation, and the fear all mount, and over the edge he goes.

We get no answer to what was going on, the story just "dies". I feel like this may have been left as an opening for a sequel?

The Audible version was gifted to me in exchange for an honest review. Neil White does a very decent job of the narration, especially with the accents for the Scottish island locals.

dumb plot. it did not work for me. some one else might like it. not me

Nice story, poor execution

This could have been good. The story is creepy, and almost believeable. It has the scares in all the right places. However, the production quality falters. There are Audible pages turns, and at times it seems the narrator has lost his place. The pauses are sometimes long and awkward. If the editing was fixed up this could be a rather good short. I was given a review copy of this at my request and have left an unbiased review.
