Resumen del Editor

"I was in absolutely top physical and mental shape when this happened, and I will do whatever it takes to get back to where I was."

At the start of his second year at Harvard, Martin was hit by a car and thrown 150 feet. He landed on his head, suffering severe traumatic brain injury. He resolved to get back.

Climbing Back: A Family's Journey Through Brain Injury follows Martin's sister, father, and mother (the author) as they accompany Martin through rehabilitation and recovery. They find that they too must work to get back, to heal their own minds and souls.

Climbing Back chronicles their extraordinary, transformative journey of realignment and recovery - illuminating mysteries and miracles large and small, laughter's restorative power, and the natural world's vital relationship to the process of healing.

Outstanding

Enjoyed the story of such a brave family and the courage demonstrated. What a strong young man with such will. This is a great book for those encountering similar situations. Through tragedy, everyone was positive, supportive and kept the faith in recovery. Faith, strength, and determination are key to overcoming situations like this. God is the healer and faith in him is important. Thank you for sharing your story with the world and your way of coping with tragedy. It takes a lot to re-live difficult times. Strongly recommend this book for those trying to overcome tragedy.

Compelling story of recovery

This audio book was read by the author.
She held my attention with her clarity, rhythm, inflection and literate accentuation.
It is a candid story of a son’s injury, recover and the gradual acceptance of disability.
It is an especially important story, which is told through a mother’s eyes, of the journey from intensive care to rehabilitation and the transition back to independence.
Although, her son made remarkable progress it was difficult, stressful, heartbreaking and incomplete.
The author struggled with her own feelings, biases, anger and frustration on how to best support her son without being too overprotective.
When a patient is unable to communicate effectively due to an injury or medical condition often a family member must step in.
But this involvement in the treatment process is difficult for both medical clinicians and family members.
The story provided useful insight for family engagement in treatment and recovery.

Live in a Hidden Part of Our Culture?

I disagree with Dr. Joseph S. Ratner when he states people with brain injury live in the hidden part of our culture. We are not hidden. A brain injury is not visible to the naked eye upon superfluous observation.
This book is a beautiful example of the strength in communal and familial love and support combined with her son's inner strength and determination to successfully journey through brain injury and the medical establishment. I recommend this book as a must read to anyone with a family member or loved one who has experienced a trauma to the brain.
