From Chapter 1: I was enjoying the early morning drive across the vast expanse of Kansas prairie… As I topped another hill the horizon extended a few more miles. My car was wedged between two 16 wheelers, the road curved to the right increasing my view and something caught my eye. “What was that” I wondered. It looked like a shiny spot in the deep prairie grass. I tried to pull into a dirt turnout at the side of the road. “Damn, no deal there”. Ahead was a road sign for a state highway intersection and I signaled. The truck behind me applied his brakes as I made the right turn. The trucker gave me the middle finger as his big, green rig flew by, ‘Courtesy’ painted in red across the back end of his trailer. “Now that’s funny!” I groused. I followed the dirt road to the top of a hill and at the very top I stopped and got out. “What is that?” Off in the distance there seemed to be a large, deep hole. Its reflection looked as blue as the sky. “Maybe it’s a stock watering hole?” I climbed back in the car to grab my binoculars. For some reason, my hands were shaking. “Settle down, too much coffee,” I chastised myself. I focused my binoculars and took a look. As I did, I stepped backward, stunned. From the Author: It was such fun to write fiction with a heartfelt intent and message. My goal is to create emotion in the reader – any emotion will do!
