In keeping with The Rehearsal Club mission to “preserve its legacy,” a national network of former residents came together to tell their stories while living at The Rehearsal Club. Spanning four decades, 1940s-1970s, The Rehearsal Club “Cinderellas” (coined by TV Guide in the 1950s) captures New York City and Broadway history while charting the journey leading to The Rehearsal Club’s incorporation in 2019.

Carol Burnett, Blythe Danner and others are recognizable, well-known RC Alums. Each talented Cinderella memoir shares their adventurous, determined, generous spirits. Similarly to those anonymous, back-up dancers who tipped their top hats during “Singular Sensation” (the finale to A Chorus Line), by the time the last word is heard, you will know these women. Maybe recognize yourself? What we all do for love.

This anthology of young women who came to New York City to pursue entertainment and lived in a safe affordable brownstone was thanks to Rockefeller. Book gives a real life picture over decades and changes. Most stories are read by authors or family, giving their adventures a reality touch. 1940s have women on USO tours during World War II besides doing Theater. NY has blackouts.television starts/radio shows. 1950s have heartwarming tales of their beloved Carol Burnett (before and after her fame) 60s and 70s the club becomes diverse and supportive variety of jobs change.Dian Keaton, kim Cattrel,Donna Douglas, who is Ellie Mae Clampett etc. dance through the stories.Of course many antics about food. Drama-One young lady was followed home and almost strangled luckily saved, while she was working on the Ed Sullivan show. Ed Sullivan got her into the Rehearsal Club even though there was a waiting list. Their auditions, backstage with the Rockettes and an array of men friends from Marlon Brando in the 40s, James Dean in the 50s,Rod Sterling,Robert De Niro all pop up. Exceptionally talented gals many very young that supported each other. I’ve read it twice because different things come out each time. Missed knowing what happened to them after their story.Only found a section called “who we are today “., stuck in writing in the back after the second listen . That should be corrected.
