As they were bagging their meager findings, a sudden sound echoed from the front of the store – a faint scuff, like a boot on loose gravel. Both men froze, their bodies tensing. Mike slowly raised his rifle, his finger hovering over the trigger. Ben drew his machete, his knuckles white. The silence that followed was deafening, stretching out, each second an eternity. Then, another sound, closer this time – the unmistakable creak of the store's front door, the one they had pried open.

"Someone's here," Ben breathed, his voice tight.

Mike signaled for Ben to stay put, then moved silently towards the front of the store, his rifle leading the way. He peered through a crack in the boarding, his heart pounding against his ribs. The light was poor, but he could make out a figure standing just inside the entrance, silhouetted against the weak daylight. It was a person, dressed in ragged clothes, their form hunched and uncertain. They weren't armed that he could see, but their stillness was unnerving. They seemed to be listening, their head cocked.

Before Mike could formulate a plan, the figure moved. They took a tentative step forward, then another, their movements slow and hesitant, as if they were exploring a new and dangerous territory. Mike's mind raced. He could take a shot, but he didn't want to draw attention to their presence if there were more. Evasion was still the priority.

Suddenly, the figure let out a soft, choked whimper. It wasn't a sound of aggression, but of fear and perhaps despair. Mike hesitated. This wasn't the hardened raider he had expected. This sounded… lost.

"Stay here," he whispered to Ben, and then, in a voice that was deliberately gentle, he called out, "Hello? Anyone there?"

The figure flinched, then scrambled back towards the entrance, disappearing through the opening with a panicked haste. Mike rushed to the gap, peering out. The figure was gone, swallowed by the shadows of the street. He heard the faint sound of retreating footsteps, growing fainter with each passing second.

"Did you see them?" Ben asked, his voice laced with relief that it wasn't an immediate confrontation.

"Just one," Mike replied, lowering his rifle slightly. "Looked… scared. Not like a threat. More like someone else who's struggling to survive." He paused, his brow furrowed. "But that means Oakhaven isn't entirely empty. We need to move. Now. We got what we came for, and we're not staying to find out who else is lurking in the shadows."
