When small-town girl Mia Hart arrives in New York City, she dreams of making a name for herself in the fast-paced world of marketing. But as she navigates the bustling streets and the demands of her new job, she finds herself captivated by her charming but formidable boss, Colin O'Brian.
As the holiday season approaches, Mia grapples with her growing feelings for Colin while trying to prove herself in the office. When they are thrust into a high-stakes project together, their professional relationship deepens, revealing a shared passion for their work and a connection that transcends the corporate world.
But as Christmas nears, Mia must confront her emotions and decide whether to risk her heart for a chance at love. Amid the twinkling lights of the city and the warmth of newfound friendships, Mia discovers that faith, courage, and love can blossom in the most unexpected places.
Join Mia on her journey of self-discovery and romance in "Christmas in New York," a heartwarming holiday tale about finding love where you least expect it and the miracles that come from embracing your true self.
As someone who's returned to the faith, I appreciated how more than one character praised the Lord God Almighty without crying out to Him in the acts of lovemaking.
I liked how Mia said prayers to thank God for what He provided her (peace in her soul, blessings, amazing opportunities, etc.), and how He is the first thought in her mind over any man. I'm with Mia on this one; faith in God above all else, then your spouse and children, then everything else.
Although Mia is the first to acknowledge she has feelings for Colin, I won't tell you who says I love you first; you need to read the book yourself to find that out, but I do love the scene where those words are finally said to each other. Mia and Colin belong together, and I couldn’t wait to find out if they get married post-story's end.
I'd have to say my favorite character is Mia. She's a God-loving young woman with a smart head on her shoulders, and she's relatable in the ways of faith in God. I love her wholesome personality and how the passion she and Colin have for each other is restrained in a way I'm unaccustomed to in other dark romance novels I read. Usually, the characters jump into bed together almost immediately, and even in slow-burn romances, the characters give into physical desire before they're ever married (although I read almost exclusively books with premarital sex, I respect a couple, fictional or otherwise, who want to wait till their wedding night to consummate their relationship. That's uncommon these days, abstaining from sex until your wedding night, but it's an old tradition I respect and hope to have myself.).
I primarily read dark romance, science fiction here and there, and a few young adult fiction novels a time or two, but I never really read Christian fiction novels. What did I feel as I read this book? Surprised! I was surprised because I don't normally read books without some form of smut, and this book proved I can enjoy a book without so much sex in it, and I was quite surprised how I've found myself open to reading more Christian fiction novels in the future.
Basic as this might sound, the whole book was my favorite part, ha-ha! But if I really had to choose one favorite part, it would be the winter picnic Colin set up for himself and Mia. It was just such a beautiful, descriptive scene that evoked all my love for romance into one exciting moment--I loved it!
In this book, there were no scenes that left a negative impact on me, only positive ones. I'll admit to getting all teary inside while reading the tail end of the book, a new beginning for Mia and Colin as a couple. I didn't know I'd think 100% positive thoughts over a book that lacks smut 100% of the time, but I was happily surprised and wanting an independent film on YouTube depicting every detail of this sweet-as-sugar-and-light-as-cotton-candy novel.
Being a dark romance reader, I love books with steam, and even further, smut, but this book had none of that. I wouldn't consider it a factor I disliked because the book was well beyond strong enough to hold its readers attention without giving into physical connection, and not every author these days can do that where the romance genre is concerned. This book was well-written and didn't need sex to carry a connection between characters, so I won't ever say that's a dislike, in my opinion.
This book was indeed a page-turner; I read it in an hour and a half! The change of scenery was descriptive without going overboard, and the ending was like icing on cake, their love story continuing despite not having an epilogue.
If I was the author of Christmas in New York in place of Kayla Lowe, the only thing I'd change to make this book even better than it already is would be adding an epilogue where Mia and Colin get married, then flash-forward a few years into the future again where Mia and Colin have twin boys, Hudson and Manny (names inspired by the Hudson River and the borough of Manhattan), and Mia is pregnant with a little girl, whom she and Colin want to name Brooklyn (another NYC borough). Other than those tiny details, I wouldn’t change a single thing! I wouldn't even add a sex scene describing Mia and Colin's wedding night, surprisingly or not, ha-ha!
This book isn't a mix of any other books I've read recently, and I don't usually read office romance novels because that isn't something I want for myself (I want to be a stay-at-home mom), but having read this, I appreciate the office romance trope on a new level. If I could recommend this book to anyone, I'd tell my mom about this book, have her read it, and tell me what she thinks. Even though she went through a dark romance reading phase in her twenties, she loves clean romances now, so I know she'd appreciate this faith-based love story tenfold. My rating? Five out of five stars, hands down! From plot to performance to transition of one scene to the next, I'd give it all five stars and won't consider anything less. I'll definitely be reading more of Kayla Lowe's novels in the future, and I might start right after I post this review, ha-ha!
