Kate made the bold decision to take her 9-year-old daughter, Sophie, from North Carolina to spend Christmas with their longtime family friend, Becky, in northern Ontario. Despite her ex-husband's strong objections and attempts to prevent Sophie from traveling, Kate triumphed, securing permission for their much-anticipated trip. However, just hours after departing, chaos erupted as all flights across North America were grounded, forcing their plane to make an emergency landing. As they disembarked, Kate disabled airplane mode and was inundated with alarming notifications of a nuclear attack on the USA.
Frantically texting Becky, Kate learned they needed to reach the Canadian border, just 25 kilometers north, as it was still open. Braving the frigid winds, they trudged along the icy highway until they caught a ride from a part-time firefighter and farmer on his horse-drawn hay wagon, helping stranded travelers. Becky met them at the border and drove them north. Upon reaching her cabin, they found warmth and solace but were soon advised to head to the domes for safety. Inside the dome, they formed new friendships.
