Resumen del Editor

Charles Darwin published The Origin of Species, his revolutionary tract on evolution and the fundamental ideas involved, in 1859. Nearly 150 years later, the theory of evolution continues to create tension between the scientific and religious communities. Challenges about teaching the theory of evolution in schools occur annually all over the country. This same debate raged within Darwin himself, and played an important part in his marriage: his wife, Emma, was quite religious, and her faith gave Charles a lot to think about as he worked on a theory that continues to spark intense debates.

Deborah Heligman's new biography of Charles Darwin is a thought-provoking account of the man behind evolutionary theory: how his personal life affected his work and vice versa. The end result is an engaging exploration of history, science, and religion for young readers.

wonderful prospective

what an amazing story of love. It made Charles a friend to me rather than "the man with the controversial theory.

An enchanting book

I couldn't stop listening to this. The author did a wonderful job weaving together the story of Charles Darwin's personal and scientific life, and created a really vivid picture of Charles and Emma Darwin's relationship and family life. The book has also inspired me to read (well actually to listen to) Origin of Species.

Intriguing and thought-provoking

Would you listen to Charles and Emma again? Why?

I found the train of thought fascinating as Darwin developed his ideas. Even more interesting was the love he and his Emma shared, though their philosophies differed so dramatically.

What was one of the most memorable moments of Charles and Emma?

The death of their ten year old daughter, Annie was poignant and mystifying to me. That he did not visit her grave for so many years was puzzling, as he was the only parent in the vicinity when she died.

What about Rosalyn Landor’s performance did you like?

She is able to convey characters with voices both believable and easy on the ears.

If you were to make a film of this book, what would be the tag line be?

Love across a chasm.

Any additional comments?

I am grateful for this mode of

Anthony and Cleopatra have nothing on the Darwins.

The marriage of Charles and Emma Darwin should not be a good book. There are no secrets, no lies, no affairs - was there even a quarrel? Normally reading a book about two people so totally devoted to each other would be at best boring, more likely, nauseating; but this book is arresting and uplifting. This view of the Darwins is unique, its a personal narrative with only a little science instead of the other way around. It is not without tension, but is full of deep emotion that held me for the duration. The last paragraph is perhaps the most touching and poetic thing I have ever read in a biography of any kind.

Sweet and informative

Beautiful story. The reading would have been very god except for the reader loering her voice for Darwin's voice, msking him sound pompous and maling it really uncomfortable to hear his quotes! Otherwise: great!!!

I'm ape for this book!

Why this book is being hyped for teens and young adults is beyond me. I'm sixty and found it to be informative, interesting, and moving. The love story of Charles and Emma was amazing, considering the vast differences in their beliefs. There's just enough of the usual "Charles Darwin" history to keep one riveted. Something for the romantic and something for the scientist.....don't monkey around, you should naturally select this book!

wonderful depiction of history

Truly enjoyed learning about Charles Darwin from the perspective as a husband and father. Wonderfully researched. Excellent narration!

Sucked

Very one sided, misrepresents Christianity. A much better biography than science book or religious reference. Narrator was fine.
