Celebrities narrates the lives and works of 40 filmmakers, actors and writers the author has met over the last 20 years. Through interview-based, inter-linked profiles of these world-renowned personalities, the reader takes a cultural tour around the globe. The journey kicks off with charming Juliette Binoche of France and continues to Iran to meet two of Iran’s most prominent filmmakers. Briefly we return to France to listen to the vicissitudes of superstar Gérard Depardieu and call on Chiara Mastroianni to discover what it’s like to be the daughter of two superstars: Marcello Mastroianni and Catherine Deneuve. We move on to Italy for pleasant encounters with the likes of Claudia Cardinale actor David Niven described: ‘After spaghetti, Italy’s happiest invention.’ We stop over in Turkey to talk to Nobel laureate, Orhan Pamuk, before heading for UK where the great actor/musician/artist Anthony Hopkins delights us with his sophisticated, creative work be it in acting, composing or painting. We travel to USA to understand and appreciate the works of A-list stars like Harrison Ford, John Malkovich and Susan Sarandon and take an inside look at the brilliant careers of movie directors with the caliber of Frank Oz, William Friedkin and Gus Van Sant. We return to Europe for a chat with Spain’s international movie star Carmen Maura and on to Germany to discover what have inspired the impressive output of cinema personalities like Wim Wenders and Edgar Reitz. We go to China to meet two 6th-generation filmmakers making intimate Chinese movies with a European flavour. We learn about contemporary Japan through the words and images of Masahiro Kobayashi and about today’s South Korea via the visually stunning films of cineaste Kim Ki-Duk. The journey adjourns in France talking to veteran Alain Cavalier and wondering if the gifted film director has ever worked or contemplates working with Juliette Binoche.
