Resumen del Editor

For two moviegoing generations, Cary Grant was class—an effortless embodiment of gentlemanly grace and humor. But Cary Grant’s greatest achievement was in creating himself and the irresistible character he became. In this savvy, fascinating portrait, McCann tracks the transformation of a life and looks closely at the sources of Cary Grant’s charms, which did not come easily. Generously filled with anecdotes about fellow actors and directors, a realistic portrait of a complicated man emerges. And although Grant was criticized for remaining in Hollywood during World War II, it now seems that he may have worked as a special agent for British Intelligence: in 1947, Grant was awarded the King’s Medal for Service in the Cause for Freedom, an honor that was not made public at the time.

One of classic Hollywood’s definitive leading men, Cary Grant was named one of the greatest male stars of all time by the American Film Institute. This biography yields a new appreciation of his work and his persona, which was at once familiar, yet always enigmatic, even to those who knew him best.

Graham McCann was educated at King’s College, Cambridge. His books include Marilyn Monroe: The Body in the Library, Woody Allen: New Yorker, and Rebel Males: Clift, Brando, and Dean. A fellow and lecturer at Cambridge for twelve years, he now writes full time.

Reseñas de la Crítica

“A terrific biography that explores the origins and dazzle of Grant’s class act.” ( Elle)
“McCann’s outstanding achievement is his analysis of Grant’s singular and lasting appeal as a classy but classless star.” ( Booklist)
“A delightful appreciation of the archetypal movie star…In a pleasing mix of life story and film analysis, [McCann] meditates on the idea of Cary Grant and the actual person…Neat, well researched, and witty, the book earns respect for the author and a familiar wry smile at its reincarnation of Cary Grant.” ( Kirkus Reviews)

Great read/listen

this is the 3rd Cary Grant audiobook I've listened to. although shorter than the other books, it was a joy to listen to. hits all the important points without overwhelming details. I will probably listen to again.

Superior

This is a superb biography. I learned so much about Cary Grant. I was in love with him as a little girl, watching his black and white movies on our B & W tv! Had no idea he was older than my dad! He was SO funny, SO smart. SO handsome, dressed beautifully, moved so well. Had an accent that was unidentifiable. I appreciate the author’s refusal to gloss over CG.

This reading captures the essence that is Cary Grant.

I enjoyed this book so much. Without thinking about the man I gained so much insight into his personality & what made him tick as a human being. Other than being a failure at marriage, if only more men could be like Cary Grant.

Wow, I feel like I know him now!

I wasn't really expecting much when I started this book but was I ever surprised! It's an incredible heartwarming story about Cary and when I got to the end, I wished there was more. Seems like he would've been a cool dude to hang with. Just a wonderful read!

no surprises

Narrator was very good. Interesting life but never experienced any connections with the person of Grant.

Great review and appropriate reading

Well done.
Never read a previous biography of Cary but this gave a terrific survey of his early life, acting career and late years. I appreciated the narration and liked the interjected movie passages of his characters to show how clever he came off on screen.
He lived a life beyond his humble upbringing and it all had to do with his taking personal responsibility and being wisely critical of himself to grow and learn.
I admire him and it’s not something I feel for most s as cries. He was both a kind soul and lived life with grace and gentlemanly tact.
Will listen several times. Would recommend if you like old hollywood.

Somewhat uplifting

It was a nice divergence from the typical sex, drugs and poor decisions saga many memoirs plod. The author offers some detail without belaboring the telling of an interesting life’s story.

A wonderful portrait of an unusually wonderful man and actor.

Cary Grant was truly one of a kind. Mr. McCann obviously knows that, and it shows in this interesting and delightful biography. Highly recommend.

Honestly written, Lovingly told.

Sometimes it is difficult to read about a person you've always loved but never knew. After almost 9 hours it's clear we will never really "know" Cary Grant or Archibald Leech. In many ways that is how it should be. We know him how he wants us to know him. Yet it is clear he would have been a very nice friend to have. His whole life was one of a great example to emulate. It seems like after reading this book I have put him on a pedestal. Quite the contrary. He is now honestly real and human.
Sometimes Grover Garners voice becomes shrill and he talks a bit too fast but all in all, he does a good job.
