Visiting South Africa was special for so many reasons, as the level of physical and linguistic diversity is stunning in conjunction with the radical liberal undercurrent that is sweeping throughout the country and the other 45 sub-Saharan African nations. The geography, plant life, and weather are unique, and although similar to many places that I have traversed on the planet, the combination of them was unique to this nation. There were lots of treasures in the nation that one can only experience while visiting it, like the four seasons in one day and buchu, the fragrant aromatic herb, used in shampoo and lotion. The vision that I have of SA is one as a hub of development for the entire African Continent, bringing water, sanitation, energy, and infrastructure mixed with cooperation and upward mobility via capitalism for all people on the continent. It’s clear that nations surrounding SA are facing a myriad of health and political challenges, but cooperation and foresight by some young, educated Africans could change the entire standard of living on the continent within a generation. In general, SA is one of the most exclusive and slightly quirky destinations that should be on every traveler’s bucket list. The nation is on its way to healing from its past, and what I witnessed was a harmonious collaboration of people living independently and happily. The future for SA and the rest of the African Continent is extremely bright and beautiful if chosen by the people in combination with continued synergy, good leadership, quality healthcare, and prioritization given to hard work and education. What a great trip; what a great country!
