Canaan to Carthage is a book ostensibly written by Shane Larson, but I don't think I have ever read a book where I so frequently got distracted wondering if this was AI or not. I don't want to actually accuse Mr Larson of having ChatGPT write his book but... well... actually, I do. If Shane Larson really did write this book, he has mastered the art of using a lot of words to say a whole bunch of nothing, as well as anyone who truly is human ever has.

I downloaded this book because (a) it was free, and (b) the Phoenicians are the ancient Mediterranean civilization I know least about. The Minoans, the Greeks, Assyrians, Hebrews, Egyptians, and even the Hittites are peoples I have read much more about. Honestly, I wasn't expecting a lot from a free book that is less than five hours long. But I am willing to bet any 7th grade teacher could do more. Schedule those kids three classes on the Phoenecians in an ancient history class, and those kids will learn more about the Phoenecians than this book shares.

If my primary guess at this being AI is incorrect, my second guess was that Shane Larson was channeling his inner rookie tour guide. Imagine a tour guide who is pretty new at his job. He really doesn't have much more information than what the brochure can provide, but he has to lead people through some ancient Phoenician archaeological site. "Religion was an important aspect of Phoenician daily life, and it had a major impact on every aspect of what they did. They worshipped Bel, Astarte, and Melqart and built many wonderful temples to them. Because the Phoenicians were a seafaring people, their religious beliefs incluenced many other societies and were in turn influenced by them." Beyond a sentence or two each, you learn nothing about these three gods. There are no descriptions of the temples. You have no idea what impact or influence it played on their lives beyond "important" and covered "every aspect". This tour guide of an author knows nothing about what he is writing. But he will pretend to tell you a lot about that nothing and do his best to convince you how awesome that nothingness is.

Now imagine five hours of rubbish like this. When I ask AI a question it cannot answer, it will almost never tell me it cannot answer my question. Instead, it will give me the required length of words written in a way that tells me nothing while hiding the fact that this is what it is doing. The required length for Shane Larson was about five hours. And this book was AI's answer.
