I grew up loving Jesus, Sunday potlucks, and the feeling of grass under my bare feet. I just did not realize for a long time that the last one could apply to my whole self. I was raised hearing a lot about modesty, and most of it boiled down to covering up anything that might cause someone else to think something they should not. But no one ever explained to me why God would give us skin and then expect us to be ashamed of it. I am not talking about lust or flaunting or any of that. I am talking about the simple reality that God made us bare in the garden, and called that good.
So years later, as a grown woman who loves Jesus deeply and who also loves to feel sunlight on every inch of the body He crafted, I found myself stepping into the world of Christian naturism. That is just a fancy term for being a nudist who follows Jesus. It surprised me how natural it felt. It surprised me how many others were quietly feeling the same tug. And it surprised me how much hiking fit right into that puzzle.
My husband John, who is the sort of man who will shovel snow in flip flops and call it “invigorating,” was several steps ahead of me on the nudist front. He grew up more free spirited. I, on the other hand, had to work through all the worries about what people might say. But the first time we went hiking in the mountains without clothes, something clicked. The air felt honest. The trees felt like church. And there was not a single moment where I felt immodest or unsafe or unholy. Just present. Just human. Just loved.
When I talk about nude hiking, I am not talking about exhibitionism. I am not suggesting you charge up the nearest crowded national park trail announcing your liberation like you just discovered fire. I am talking about quiet space. I am talking about honoring your body as something God intentionally crafted, not a problem to be hidden. I am talking about an act of worship that is as natural as breathing.
So if you have ever wondered whether being naked in the woods conflicts with your faith, I am here to tell you from my own life that it can be one of the most spiritually grounded experiences you will ever have. God meets us outdoors. He always has. And sometimes the clothes are just one more layer between us and His creation.
Come along with me, and I will tell you what I have learned.
