How is the monastic life to bear witness in the climate of the present age to the primacy of God, and to stand as a sign that his Kingdom is at hand? Dom Jean Leclercq's reflections in the title essay are an unwitting commentary on the story of two particular communities described in this pamphlet. Their origins and daily life may be said to exemplify also the prophetic element in monasticism discussed in the final essay. From the striking witness of four different traditions (Roman Catholic, Coptic Orthodox, Presbyterian and Anglican) we come to see that monastic life can never be static, but that Stability standing at the foot of the Cross is necessary if monks are to bear the burden of the Kingdom as it breaks in to each successive age. It is thus that monastic tradition continues in our own times as 'the stream of the Holy Spirit coming to us through the Church from the Crucified and Glorified Christ'.
