Richie Stevens and Sandy Smith’s relationship has moved on since Richie asked his secretary to become his partner, both professionally and personally. During their first holiday together in Italy they meet Sophie, a friend of Sandy’s, whose brother Carter Blake, a prominent forensic scientist, is being accused of murdering his fiancée, in spite of the fact that no body has been found. Richie and Sandy agree to help by investigating the case on Sophie’s behalf and with the help of Detective Chief Inspector Norman Freeman, who has recently retired from the Met, they discover a link to one of their previous cases. Sarah Lawson has always been unfinished business where Richie and Sandy are concerned and now it looks as if fate has given them to opportunity to close the file once and for all
