Acerca de esta escucha
This course is a remarkable exploration of the most popular Christian writer of the 20th century.
An atheist for the beginning of his adulthood, C.S. Lewis later converted to Christianity, largely due to the influence of Catholic writers J. R. R. Tolkien and G. K. Chesterton. He then went on to become one of the most powerful Christian writers of his time, penning such quintessential apologetic works as Mere Christianity. Today, he is cherished by Christians and non-Christians throughout the world.
In this 15-lecture audio course, you will explore Lewis’ fiction, discovering many of his most beloved works anew by examining them through a theological lens. By looking at such themes as the central doctrines of creation, the fall, the vices and the virtues, asceticism, and deification, you will come to a deeper understanding of Lewis' fiction. In particular, Lewis’ gift for poetic images and dramatic narrative lent itself to powerful expressions of transfiguration in his novels.
First, you will begin with an explanation of these themes, discovering how they are illustrated in such works as The Screwtape Letters, Pilgrim's Regress, and The Space Trilogy. Later, you will dive into Lewis’ most popular novels, the Chronicles of Narnia series.
Discover the enduring spiritual power of Lewis’s fiction today.

Composed toward the end of the first millennium, Beowulf is the elegiac narrative of the adventures of Beowulf, a Scandinavian hero who saves the Danes from the seemingly invincible monster Grendel and, later, from Grendel's mother. He then returns to his own country and dies in old age in a vivid fight against a dragon. The poem is about encountering the monstrous, defeating it, and then having to live on in the exhausted aftermath.

Born in the fourth century, Saint John Cassian (AD 360 - 435) lived when tensions between the traditional and innovative peaked. A monk and theologian, Cassian made the Christian tradition relevant for the needs of his day in his spiritual works. Indeed, his spirituality remains essential today; he influenced Saints Benedict and Ignatius of Loyola, and his works continue to be read worldwide.

For Merton, being contemplative meant living out the essential elements of the spiritual life. Having lived out the challenges and triumphs of a contemplative life, Merton had a plethora of practical advice to offer. If the inspiration of the Holy Spirit is truly at work daily, then what does it look like? How can we identify its authentic presence? If it's important to spend time in silence with God, how do we go about entering into it fruitfully?

Travel into the desert with Thomas Merton as your guide. In the third century, men and women journeyed into the deserts of Syria and Egypt. Turning away from the world, they sought to find salvation in solitude. By doing so, they developed new forms of monasticism and spirituality. Now known as the Desert Fathers and Mothers, their wisdom remains as inspirational today as ever.

There's a lot packed into this audio, but the stuff on The Silver Chair made that Chronicle a new favorite for me. There's treasure throughout, though. Great, great thoughts on Narnia here, and no leaps in logic or obnoxious controversial claims, no torturing Lewis into the author's own personal views, that tedious habit of many Lewis scholars. Just a careful, intelligent study.
This is rich material
