Acerca de esta escucha

Society's eligible women are in mourning. Lord Peter Wimsey has married at last, having finally succeeded in his ardent pursuit of the lovely mystery novelist Harriet Vane. The two depart for a tranquil honeymoon in a country farmhouse but find, instead of a well-prepared love nest, the place left in a shambles by the previous owner. His sudden appearance, dead from a broken skull in the cellar, only prompts more questions.

Why would anyone have wanted to kill old Mr. Noakes? What dark secrets had he to hide?

The honeymoon is over, as Lord Peter and Harriet Vane start their investigations. Suspicion is rife, and everyone seems to have something to hide, from the local constable to the housekeeper. Wimsey and his wife can think of plenty of theories, but it's not until they discover a vital fact that the identity of the murderer becomes clear.

How have I missed out on this gem my whole life?

Never a fan of Agatha Christie, I've long assumed that all the "golden age of detective fiction" authors would also be not to my taste -- but I was so wrong. Dorothy L. Sayers (along with Margery Allingham, who I discovered first) well deserves her reputation as one of the queens of the golden age.

Just what I needed to get me out of myself.

A fine, absorbing story in all its details, remarkable, moving quotes to lead off each chapter, moving poetry, too, of Lord Peter in love with the perfect woman and she in love with him. Some really transcendent moments! And to top it all off, extraordinary narration by a real master.

Love & healing vs hate and death

Finally Harriett marries Peter, escape paparazzi to a country house honeymoon and find a corpse in the cellar. Sayers gives us a delicious payoff for years of waiting to see this compelling couple come together! They discover deep, true love and healing, and also uncover greedy hatred and death. Funny, wise, eccentric as Sayers is in all her novels, this, in my mind, is second only to Gaudy Night in brilliance and delight!

Missing Chapters

I have read this book and it is missing the last two to three chapters. In fact the last three chapters are repeats of the first three. Otherwise it's a good book.

Listened first time for curiosity, second for humorous accents and third for insight about love in marriage

Not bored at all, but laughed more than cried and was touched deeply several times. A glowing little story.

Not faint canaries, but ambrosial

Sex upstairs a la John Donne, murder in the basement a la Gray's Anatomy. Sayers at her maddeningly mystical and corporeal best. Busman's Honeymoon provides deepening insight into Peter Wimsey and Harriet Vane. The rare clash and melding of two fierce and independent people are shown here, defining and resolving that union which 20th century society was pleased to name marriage. The author takes stale tropes of romance and mystery, airs them, shakes them out, presses and mends them, until we are delighted to rediscover the joy both these genres can provide. Look up the Donne poems Sayers quotes and read them as you go, to enrich your own spirit and keep up with our favorite couple.

A mystery story plus profound human insights! What could be better?

Dorothy Sayers creates many delightful characters enmeshed in intriguing mysteries of great complexity. As the series progresses, she decides that Lord Peter needs a female companion, so she writes herself into the series; and in doing so, creates with wisdom and delicacy, a rather extraordinary loving relationship between Lord Peter and herself, two intelligent and independent individuals, who learn to accommodate the other with kindness, tact, and patience. Quite a bonus for a detective story!
Her plots remind me of Chesterton's "Father Brown Mysteries"; unraveling the plot proceeds in tandem with revelation of the characters' personalities and motivations, the reasons for committing the crime.
Three cheers for the story and for the performance; both are delightful!

I enjoy them all particularly the 3 I consider the Harriet trilogy - Strong Poison, Gaudy Night & Busman’s Honeymoon. Much enjoyed! 1st time w audio.

Great story for Wimsey/Vane fans. Lots of insight into complicated relationships.
Narration rapid, but that can be fixed.
