This short book shares the key lessons and experience accumulated over 40 years of involvement with start-up ventures in a variety of industries, most focus on software and internet technology but equally applicable to any enterprise. My role in these ventures has ranged from professional adviser to investor to co-founder to general counsel to chief financial officer to business development executive. Given the breadth of my professional training and experience, I see the big picture from many angles, but also am acutely aware of all the many details that need attending to build a solid foundation for success. That breadth of professional training during my career includes being a licensed attorney, a licensed CPA, a licensed investment securities adviser, a licensed real estate broker, and a licensed insurance broker. My experience includes owning my own law firm, owning my own CPA firm, owning my own broker-dealer firm, owning my own real estate brokerage firm, and managing an investment banking firm in the 90s focused on Internet software start-ups before co-founding one of the world’s first publicly traded Internet companies in 1997. Only my law license in Arizona remains active as of the date I published this book. Today I am semi-retired, but always looking to help an exciting start-up venture if it has the right passionate team in an industry I too am passionate about. I have learned over time team is everything if you want to build a sustainable valuable venture. The team knowing about and understanding the issues this book discusses, sooner rather than later, can prove critical to the degree of their success.
