Burning Bush

‘Moses came to Horeb, the mountain of God. There the angel of the Lord appeared to him in flames of fire from within a bush... though the bush was on fire it did not burn up. God called to him from within the bush, “Moses! Moses!”

And Moses said, “Here I am.” (Exodus 3:1-4)

I think this moment when the Lord meets with Moses captures the essence of when the Lord meets with anyone – with you, with me. It is a quiet moment away from other people. It is deep, it is spiritual. It is a revelation that is beyond nature, impossible, but true – like something on fire, but not burning up.

This moment of encounter for Moses looks like an eternal moment, an eternal flame. Something on fire but not burning up or being consumed, is something that can be on fire forever – a relationship that never dims, never fades. It is a living relationship.

This is also the purest of moments, like when a child is born and meets his or her mother for the first time. God is calling Moses to a mission, to a purpose. But this moment is just encounter. It is just God and Moses together, touching one another. Being. There has been no mission yet, no chapters in the book. Just encounter.
