When Brood Company of the Star-System Elite Guards receive a distress call from a disabled vessel, they discover things are more dire than originally believed. Stranded in the middle of the Lawless Zone, the heavy freighter, Dead Ringer, has been overrun by Slugs and possibly... something even more diabolical, and deadly. Donovan "Dreadnaught" Vance, noob to the Guards, must survive along with the rest of his company to shut down an out of control shipbrain--Electra Five-Seven-Niner. Aliens meets Ex Machina in this homicidal race against the clock.

This was easily my least favorite book in the Tri-Star System Story series so far, and I believe most of that was due to the narrator selected for this short story.
Overall, this story was fairly engaging if a little predictable. There were slight twists at the end of the previous two stories or some kind of element of horror, but I saw this ending coming a mile away. Despite that, I do think this story was interesting and still had slight elements of horror (well, horror for me, but maybe not for others). It's just that this story could have really benefited from being longer. There were plenty there to work with and I just felt that it was all over too quickly.
The biggest knock against this book was the narrator, Raymond Kallai. He wasn't horrible, but for a story that relies a lot on tension and suspense he just didn't have enough depth. Dreadnaught sounded the same whether he was excited, scared, or just contemplating. It got to the point where my mind often drifted from the story because the cadence was so even.
I've really enjoyed this series so far, so this won't keep me from listening to the next volume. Hopefully, the selected a really engaging narrator for it.
Decent story, not crazy about narrator
