In 2008, Kevin Matthews, a well-known ABC and CBS radio personality in Chicago, was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis. As the drive-time radio host for 17 years and also the voice of his sports commentator, Jim Shorts, and other characters, Matthews entertained 10 million listeners weekly, sold out every appearance in the Midwest, and performed in front of 65,000 fans at Grant Park. He traveled around the world, met the famous, had babies named after him, and helped countless charities. He entertained hundreds of thousands of people inside prisons, army bases, and backyards. His promotions included comedy jams, a band, barbeque throw-downs, and golf outings.

Broken Mary is Matthews' story of his early years in radio and stand-up comedy, his successful career, his struggle with MS, his awakening to the dignity of women, and, importantly, his chance encounter with a broken statue of Mary left next to a dumpster and all that happened as a result. Told with Matthews' signature good humor, this confession of the brokenness of mankind is touchingly honest, personally inspiring, and full of hope.

Highly recommend this book for anyone who feels alone or struggling with life in general. This book will renew your spirit. Kevin Matthews has a way with words that will hold your attention throughout the entire read. Treat yourself you won't be sorry.

The King Of The Kevheads Comes Clean

I am a Kevhead. I listened to Kev’s radio show religiously during the pinnacle years of his run in Chicago. Irreverent, off the wall and always kooky Kevin Matthews played a pipe we listeners joyfully followed as we slogged our ways through the middle of our work days.

But this was in the early 1990’s. We’ve all experienced a ton of what Life throws us since then. You could always tell Kevin was a smart guy. A thoughtful person behind the parties and pranks. Most of us were.

So now he’s on the other side of those heydays and found some new ways of connection that clearly are bringing him much joy and peace. That’s what he shares here after a fun romp through the early days.

It’s just so great to hear him tell his own story here. He’s still Kevin. And I’m still an appreciative Kevhead.

So, yeah “What are ya, goofy?” Has been updated to something more along the lines of “God is great!” And I’m happy he has found this faith that clearly sustains him these days. As well as a broken Mary that serves as a beautiful metaphor of Love to so many including this ol’ radio friend.

Great book, loved it from beginning to end. Found it hard to put down. Oh and what’s his name, Mr Shorts was ok too. Lol

A trip down Memory lane

Growing up in the south suburbs of Chicago, attending a catholic grade school, Kevin Matthews was always on the radio in car as I was growing up. His reflection of his life resonates now that I am nearly 50 years old. Although I have read the book, nothing compares to him reading the book. He is a master of communication and has entertained me more hours then I can count. To this day I quote "Show's over 2:30 with my Dad and Brother. Thank you Kevin for sharing a moving story. Fantastic!!
