The author of more than a million books sold brings a gripping saga of the little girl who goes missing in 1943 and the sister who remains, forced to live with the consequences of the event for the next 70 years of her life.

When cold case agent Meghan DeFord is forced to take a six-week leave of absence after a traffic accident, she chooses to spend the time with her grandmother, whose 80th birthday is approaching. Meghan has wonderful memories of childhood summers with her Grandma Hazel and anticipates a time of relaxation and filling a scrapbook with pictures of their time together.

Meghan's mother, Diane, arrives unexpectedly and brings her long resentment towards Hazel for her overprotectiveness and near paranoia. During their time together, Hazel confesses her long-held secret: When she was a child, her little sister disappeared and no one ever found out what happened to her. That loss skewed Hazel's view of the world and affected every relationship. Meghan determines to discover not only what happened to Maggie, but to heal the rift between the two women she loves most in the world.

I give it 9.5 out of 10. Parts were predictable, but the story was so compelling... i didn't care. Looking for more of her books.

Heart wrenching

This is the story of three generations of women living under one roof. Grandma is a devout Christian, mom and daughter not so much. This is their journey. Just a heads up, Margaret Diane, the mom is a total witch in the beginning.

Three generations of women, Hazel, Diane and Meghan come together as sparks fly . . . anger, pain, and resentment going back decades meet in one home. Meghan DeFord is a cold case detective in Arkansas who recently suffered a car wreck, leaving her with a broken ankle. Opting to spend her recovery time with her grandmother, Hazel, in Nevada, she flies out, only to learn, upon arrival, that her mother, Diane, is also there with all of her dogs, which her grandmother hates. Stuck in the house with two bickering women, and on crutches, Meghan begins a scrapbook of her grandmother's lifetime, celebrating her upcoming 80th birthday . . . searching for photos, and lovingly hoping for a memorable gift. Most of the book is about the very complicated relationship between the three women . . . Hazel, having suffered a tragic loss at the young age of ten, and never being able to speak of it again in the following 70 years . . . Diane, her daughter, angry and always feeling over protected and smothered by Hazel, never knowing why, and losing her father at a young age . . . and then Meghan, Diane's daughter, with a wonderful, close relationship to her grandmother, Hazel, but forever feeling completely detached and neglected by her own mother . . . the three women, delving into photographs discover a past that had long been buried . . . and the faith of a young girl, who held tight to Jesus, despite horrific loss, despite parents who were too devastated to relate to her, and despite all that life brought . . . faith the size of a mustard seed . . . blossomed . . . this is an amazing, healing, and emotional journey . . . one you DO NOT want to miss . . .

Generational Pain and the Faith of a Child

There were times I wished it moved faster, but the author was worse about fully billing all the emotions in the story. I was able to see the actions as well as waving a movie. and felt the emotions also.

very enjoyable
