Liz Murray was born to loving but drug-addicted parents in the Bronx. In school she was taunted for her dirty clothing and lice-infested hair, eventually skipping so many classes that she was put into a girls' home. At age 15, Liz found herself on the streets when her family finally unraveled. She learned to scrape by, foraging for food and riding subways all night to have a warm place to sleep.
When Liz's mother died of AIDS, she decided to take control of her own destiny and go back to high school, often completing her assignments in the hallways and subway stations where she slept. Liz squeezed four years of high school into two, while homeless; won a New York Times scholarship; and made it into the Ivy League.
Breaking Night is an unforgettable and beautifully written story of one woman's indomitable spirit to survive and prevail, against all odds.

Incredible story!
I listened to this book in record time! The horrific conditions these children survived at the hands of their parents, the huge and understanding hearts that only children can have, the beastly grip of addiction, and so much more is revealed in this true life story. The endurance, compassion, and forgiveness this story outlines has impacted me beyond words. This story compels and inspires me to become more involved with homeless children’s programs in our area, and get my privileged self signed back up to volunteer at our local soup kitchen

Heartbreaking tale of those who fall through the cracks
Liz’s story was hard to read and infuriating to listen to at times because you want to shake her parents for their complete lack of ability to parent (or even adult), but at times you want to shake Liz for her ability to love them unconditionally. However, it is this same trait which probably helps her survive as well. It is also one the reader could learn from - I think most of us could stand to judge less and accept and love more. It is also a story which highlights the massive flaws is our overworked and unstaffed welfare, education, and foster care systems. If these agencies were staffed by educated and dedicated individuals like those Liz stumbled upon in her final school, we would have fewer falling through the cracks. However, this would require a complete overhaul of our systems including pay and who is hired for those roles - something unlikely to ever happen unfortunately.

Best Book I Have Ever Listened To!
This book is narrated by the author and she does an absolutely amazing job! Her story is so heartfelt and compelling. I am surprised she wasn't crying while recording. This book was so inspiring to me, that I ran my 1st marathon after listening to her book. It is beyond motivational. Her true life story is so unfortunate and her outcome is so magical for a lack of better reference. I cannot do this book justice. A MUST LISTEN for everyone. A great family book. Really puts life into perspective. I wish I could go on and on! I am so proud of her, she is the epitome of a fighter! What a wonderfully courageous human being!
