Three years ago, Brady Charles was at the top of his game. Then he foolishly did 'The Right Thing,' and lost it all. Ostracized and blacklisted from the corporate world, he is reduced to doing odd jobs and operating an illegal pedal cab service catering to the residents of the outer districts. Brady is contemplating another day of idleness when Annika, the Meta human responsible for his downfall, seeks him out and offers him a temporary, 'odd job.' Someone has broken into her apartment and stolen several issues of her National Geographic collection, one of the few in existence, and she wants him to find the thief. Despite his reservations, Brady takes the job because of the money and the faint hope that he will be able to resume his former life in the corporate world.
