King Derek ascends the throne and has a new young queen pregnant with his heir. The realm of Sandros has enjoyed peace for the last two hundred years and the king's biggest concern has been persecuting tax evaders. Until a contingent of a hundred armed giants camp outside his city walls.
Humans have had little contact with pure-blood giants since their war a thousand years before. The giants had sought to enslave all of mankind, and the country of Omen was slaughtered for their defiance, all except for the women gifted with premonitions. The giant king used the prophetic visions of these Oracles to retain his throne, until the wizard Bracken forged four magical swords to be wielded by mankind to beat back the giant horde.
Today magic is outlawed and the war relegated to myth. Oracles serve the kings of every realm while half-blood giant descendants mate with humans and trade between the races, though they are claimed by none.
An assassination attempt on King Derek reveals the intentions of the giant camp. It also uncovers the truth about his father's sword. When the wizard Bracken forged his weapons a thousand years before, one was given to the king of Sandros. Little does Derek realize it is still in his possession until he dispatches the giant assassins with the mythical blade, Brackenfrost, striking fear into their hearts and freezing the very blood in their veins.
Despite this attack, none of the other human kings are interested in coming to the defense of Sandros, a northern outcast on the border of the giants in their mountain. Alone, Derek and his Oracle set out on a crusade to confront the new giant king bent on avenging an age-old defeat.
Derek leaves his council to rule in his stead to the chagrin of his young queen, the twin dukes, and his brother imprisoned for attempting to usurp the throne. Even the head of the church of Sandros has his own designs, not only on the kingdom, but on the young queen as well.
The giant realm is set deep in the mountains, where veins of gold once ran like rivers. It was a wealth which bought many allies, including ones with wings who could breathe fire. No one has seen a dragon since the ancient war, but their giant nemesis is determined to bring back those glory days to his people, no matter how many human kings he must kill.
Only Derek and his Oracle stand against the giant horde. Is a fabled wizard's sword enough to turn the tide in a world without magic?
