Growing up, one of my favorite books was Instant Replay by the Green Bay Packer great, Jerry Kramer. The book chronicled the Packers' 1967 world championship season, based on a journal that Jerry had kept during the year. Ten years later in 1977, I was a senior on the University of Alabama football team. Our goal was to be national champions, and, just like the 1967 Green Bay Packers, it would take a lot of hard work and dedication to reach that goal. It was my thought that 10 years after the release of Instant Replay, maybe someone would like to listen to a similar book about a championship college team based on a journal I had kept.
Many of the stories I write about were deadly serious to us at the time, and they still are today. As such, they were very instrumental in the way we lived our lives after we left the university. On the other hand, I also recount tales of our humorous misdeeds that I hope you find amusing. As amazing as some of the stories may appear to you, let me assure you that to the best of my knowledge, they occurred exactly as I remembered them. As they say, fact is oftentimes stranger than fiction. Trust me, you can’t make up this stuff.
So, why do I think you or anyone else would care to hear about our experiences? For one thing, I hope you will find them entertaining, regardless of whether or not you are a sports fan. Secondly, and most important to me, the experiences I write about represent a defining time in our young lives when playing a simple game changed us forever and piqued the interest of thousands of sports fans across Alabama and the nation. As such, remembering these experiences is, and always will be, important to us. I hope you will agree after you hear about them.
