Bolts from the Blue

The year was 1997… and they walked openly among us. Very few people knew and even fewer believed. This is the story:

Delores “Mimi” Stevens had been a stripper at the Kit Kat Club for seven soul-depleting years. She took up the vocation, as many young women did in desperation after a one-night stand with a man she knew only as “Randy” left her hung over and pregnant in her dingy one-room trailer in Hubert North Carolina...

It was dark in her son’s room, and she could only see the corner of his little nightstand so she took a deep breath and opened it all the way. She was blind for a second, but when her eyes adjusted she saw her son Jeffrey sitting straight up and looking at the foot of his bed… at no one. She frowned then flicked on the light which startled Jeffrey, who after recognizing her, smiled;
“Hi, mommy!”
“Hi, baby, who are you talking to?”
“The man…”
Delores’ heart sank with dread and she quickly looked around the room. She moved over to the foot of her son’s bed. The fear was gone and was replaced with rage and a need to protect her son, but there was no one there.
“What man honey?”
“The man with the funny hat.”
Delores paused, then wondered if Jeffrey was having some form of sleepwalking, so asked: “Is he still here?”
“No, he left when he heard you coming…”
