Resumen del Editor

A missing comic book genius. An all-powerful hallucinogenic designer drug.

Max Bowman is haunted by both of them - and he just might lose his mind as a result.

When Max takes on the mission to find the long-lost creator of cult superhero Blue Fire, he ends up getting dosed with a chemical that upends his sanity just when he needs it the most. Now he's got to contend with zombies on the Upper East Side, a cult run by a clueless pawn, a hipster rapist who knows her way around a sword, a secret CIA spook program left over from the Cold War, and powerful old enemies who are out to destroy him - all while trying to keep his mind from crashing and burning for good.

Blue Fire's mantra in the old comic books used to be, "For good to be purged of evil...Blue Fire must endure." But now it's Max Bowman who must endure - and he's as far from a superhero as you can get.

Hilarious and Entertaining

Would you listen to Blue Fire again? Why?

Yes because the sarcastic humor and the plot are very interesting

What was one of the most memorable moments of Blue Fire?

When the main character starts hallucinating for the first time and flips out.

Which character – as performed by George Kuch – was your favorite?

Max Bowman was my favorite performance because the narrators voice seemed to fit the mental picture of what i thought Max would sound like.

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

I believe the part that moved me was when Bowmans dog was kidnapped and he realized just how much he cared about that dog.

Good

The comic book was a legend, a movie wanting to be made, but where is the author. Max undertakes to find, and runs into a mired of obstacles while doing so. The narration was good, Given audio for my voluntary review

Can't relate

I haven't been able to relate to Max or any of the other characters and the situations in which they find themselves. There's enough suspense to keep me wondering how this story ends, but not enough to keep me coming back for more.

George Kuch delivers a very satisfactory performance, although there were a couple of instances where I wished for a bit more distinction between character
voices. He does capture the voice of Max Bowman well.

Note: I was given this free review copy audiobook at my request and have voluntarily left this review.

The characters in this book are wonderfully earthy and relatable. The story is easy to follow and is well narrated by George Kuch. Bravo to both the author and narrator!

Magic Misadventures

Although this is the second book in the series it was recapped well allowing the book to be a stand alone listen. And this time it's personal in this immensely satisfying follow-up to last year's "Dark Sky." It is nearly a year later, and Max's role in bringing down the shadowy Dark Sky mercenaries has made him something of a celebrity. Okay, so he's not an A-lister, but he's certainly well known enough to qualify for Dancing With The Star if he wants. His newfound notoriety has brought Max plenty of new clients and a fatter bank account. It's also brought him a few new challenges. His relationship with Jules has hit a rough patch, and now there's a neurotic, rescue dog named Eydie (after Eydie Gorme'), who loves Max and only Max.

But the real trouble begins when Max is hired by Stan Lee wannabe "Mighty" Mel Chesler to track down Ben Mikov, the genius comic book artist behind the short-lived, cult classic "Blue Fire." Sounds pretty straight forward, and at first Max, being a fan of both the comic and comic books in general, readily agrees. It promises to be a welcome change of pace after the Dark Sky affair. Well, guess again. After having second thoughts about the job, things take an unexpected turn during a seemingly innocent lunch meeting with two of Mel's interns, Candy and Janine a.k.a. Betty and Veronica. Max gets dosed with a powerful designer, hallucinogenic drug. And thus begins a twisty tale of madness and revenge.

"Blue Fire' is a greatbook, that I genuinely had a hard time putting down. Just when I thought I knew what was happening, Canfield would metaphorically pull the rug out from under me. I was constantly off-balance, just like Max, and when all was said and done, I was sorry to see it end. If you love twisty detective stories, read it. You'll thank me and you'll thank Joel Canfield.

I received a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review and I am going to buy the first book for an other great listen.

George Kuch was very good with the delivery of the story.

High Jinx and that dam Dog

Would you listen to Blue Fire again? Why?

Yes, it's just out there enough to pique your curiousity! What more can beset Max? It's not like he goes looking for trouble to, uh, ... step in. Trouble looks for him. In an entertaining way.

What other book might you compare Blue Fire to and why?

Dark Sky, Book One in the Misadventures of Max Bowman Series. I had the pleasure of listening several months ago to Dark Sky. The audiobook sticks in my mind favorably too.

What about George Kuch’s performance did you like?

George Kuch is an excellent narrator whose voice conjures up the Max Bowman character and others in the book.

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

Head shaking. Is that a relevant reaction to this question? Laugh my butt off head shaking. Edie the pooch is a handful. The bad guys and gal are worthy of dislike and to motivate rooting for Max to persevere.

Any additional comments?

AS IN THE FIRST IN THIS SERIES, DARK SKY, THERE IS LOTS OF SALTY LANGUAGE, SEXUAL SITUATIONS AND IN THIS CASE RAPE. IF YOU'RE OFFENDED, BE FOREWARNED!

This was an excellent second effort, with a protagonist that I have enjoyed.

Thank you for the opportunity to listen to and review.

Max Bowman ROCKS!!

Any additional comments?

I listened to book one so I was very excited to find there was a book two in the Max Bowman story. This. Listen. Was. So. Good.

Max is a reluctant hero and spending a day in his head is a treat. We get the same cast of characters from the first book, which was fun, but this listen worked as a stand alone as well.

The mystery was superb. The narration was stellar. The world is safe again. For now.

Soooo good!

Book 2 is even better than the first one. Absolutely loved it!
Max & PMA are back! How long do I have to wait for book 3?
Any comic nerd will love this. Any hard boiled mystery reader will love it too. Oh & lets not forget the 'zombies' in this one.
One of the things I love about these stories is that they are possible. No mission impossible crazy stunts that no human could pull off. Max is a good guy, he's a nice guy, he's an 'every man' kind of guy. You can't help but root for him.
I recommend this book to teens & adults. It's great fun!

Trigger warning for the squeamish

I didn't realize this was the second in a series when I picked it up, but it's okay because everything you need to know is recapped in this book. It's a very dark story with some scenes that may be disturbing for some readers (trigger warning). Although I liked the characters and the plot of the story, there were a couple of sections that seemed to drag on and provide little narrative push. But, overall it was a good read.

George Kuch did a great job narrating. He has the voice and timing for noir/detective stories. The pacing is a bit fast if that's an issue for you, but I thought it worked for the story.
