I must give this a performance of "5"!

This Vampire story is hilarious and reminds me a little of Neil Gaiman simply because the author is so "out of the box". Very enjoyable and quite different. Susan Bennett should get an award for her narration, truly. Her narration and slight sarcasm as well as her inflexions and voice for each character is amazing. I am looking forward to downloading the next installment.

I would highly recommend this audiobook. Let me add, it's quite entertaining. If you like fun vampire stories with interesting characters and an amazing narrator who understands what she is reading, check this one out.

BEFORE there was Sookie Stackhouse

What did you love best about Bloodsucking Fiends?

This is a story that includes a large comedic cast of characters and is set in San Francisco. The tone Moore used throughout has lots of witty, quirky realism to it, but in a non self conscious way that just plucks right along through coming of age, embarrassing erections, new love, stonerism, a little gore, and the real-life technicalities of vampirism, in a city full of homeless people, gay fortune tellers, trend obsessed youths, and upper crust yuppies.
I would describe it not only as adventurous and magical, but also a little dark, a little tense, and really fun and funny as hell. The series (3 books) does not wear its self out for the sake of endless sequels. All three books are necessary parts of the same story, which pans out over the interrelated lives of a group of people who do not have any contrived motivations, or wasted lines or narratives. It's a good time.
If you listen to this book and don't love it for some reason, try "Fool: a novel" by Christopher Moore. I think that's got to be his best!

What does Susan Bennett bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

This is a narrator who knocks it out of the park. She gave all of the characters a righteous approximation of their rightful voices, she never missed a beat of satire, she let the funny parts stay funny and the serious parts stay meaningful, all the while maintaining the nonchalant rhythm that Christopher Moore brings to his work.

Any additional comments?

Many people seem to like a lot of brooding depth with their vampire tales, and though this story does have just a touch of that, it is a funny book which NEVER takes its self too seriously. Enjoy!

Decent for Moore fans

This was sort of a Moore lite story compared to the twisted story lines of other Moore books, but it did entertain. Nothing really new but with the usual Moore perspective making it somewhat more interesting than other Vampire dark comedy stories. Do not judge Moore completely on this story. If you like the offbeat nature of this one, you will love Moore's other books.

Enjoyed it

Christopher Moore's books have been recommended to me over and over, but I've never been able to get past page 50 or so of any of the print editions. I bought this on sale and decided to give it a try in the spirit of the Halloween season. I really came to like the characters, and the Emperor and his Men are a hoot.

Well worth a listen!

Not his best book...

I was disappointed in this book, and I have not gone on to continue the series, although I may still do so at some point. Christopher Moore is one of my favorite authors and I find him to be a very intelligent and thoughtful writer. I appreciate that his books are filled with the ridiculous and yet still make me think an awful lot about what I've read and what he is 'really' trying to say.
This book to me was filled with unnecessary crudeness and the plot was flimsy. There was a definite point A to point B feel and that frustrated me. I think I'm not describing it very well, but what I'm trying to say is that this book completely lacked the depth of his other stories. It was like he was trying to jump on the Vampire bandwagon or something (although tbh I'm not sure how much of a Vampire bandwagon there was in 1995).

Anyway. This will not stop me from reading his other books, even if it did stop me from finishing the rest of this series.

Witty and PERFECTLY read!

I think this book is cleverly written and creatively read. Susan Bennet does an awesome job giving the characters personality as well as making you laugh with her unique voices. I think a narrator makes or breaks the enjoyment of an audiobook and this one definitely makes it enjoyable!

Yes, the vampire craze has been worn out but this book is worth the read. It's a cute little love story wrapped in young, sarcastic, vampire humor. It's not elaborate like Discovery of Witches or dull and unsubstantial like Twilight but a good halfway point. Worth a credit!

One of My Favorite Series

I must say that when I need a break and want a good laugh, I listen to this series. Christopher Moore is very funny. I don't listen to very many books more than once but this is one exception for me.
