The narrator did way better on this one than Book1. Thoroughly enjoyed! Love the series.

Amazing narration

The second installment of the blood books was Superbly supernatural while, still maintaining the detective forensic vibe. I love Vicky Nelson’s tough character and especially love her and salucci’s interactions.

I read the Smoke series first

I've owned this book for years, I read the smoke series first so reading these books is going back in time for me. these books were my first exposure to a mystery series and I have fallen in love with the niche genre of supernatural mysteries since.
I had no issues with the voice actor, I appreciated her ability to make such a large cat so sound unique, that is no easy task!

Different era, Brings back Memories and good story

Let me start by saying that I Like this narrator. Other reviews are hard on her, but I think she fits the personality of Vicky, the main Hard nosed ex-cop trying to cope with being a private eye personality. I think she is an asset to the books, rather than a hindrance. When you first hear her, she comes off as tying to hard to be a sexy voice, but that settles down within a minute or so to be the "edge" of Vicky. She does the French Vampire that turned Henry very well, so well in fact that I had Goosebumps the first time I heard that Vampire speak. I think she fits the personality of the series.

About the books - and as I don't want to give away the story - I do believe that people need to realize that this book was written in the 1980s, before cell phones, when phones were mounted on a kitchen wall attached to a cord. The longer the cord, the richer you were. The days when a quarter would pay for a payphone call, and there were payphones everywhere. When most people only had 1 car per family. That brought me back to my childhood and the frustrations that went along with it. And My, how times have changed!

The author does a great job at bringing the werewolves to life as not only persons/wolves within the pack but also delves a great deal into the psyche behind them, making it very clear that werewolves are NOT humans. They may look like humans, but the wolf is the most important character of them. Nor are they animals. They are uniquely themselves. Even the minor werewolf characters were well developed.

I'm not going to say anything about the plot, but I'm glad the author didn't give her characters anything. They had to really work to accomplish what they achieved. I'm also glad that unlike so many vampires, that Henry doesn't have millions in the bank, but has a job just like the rest of us to make ends meet. It makes it a bit more realistic.

Must read for vampire lovers

Urban supernatural mystery thriller about a partially blind detective and a vampire romance author. It is a series which can be read as a s stand alone without t a lot of the repetitive background. Henry Fitzroy is the illegitimate son of Henry the VIII and Vicki is a former Toronto, Ontario police detective. She was great at her job and loved her job. If is was not for the retinosa pigmentosa. She is going blind; she has lost her night vision and most of her peripheral vision.

With her night vision disability and Henry's day light disability they make the perfect detective team. Supernatural creatures are not the norm in Toronto so there is a learning / teaching curve between the vampire and detective. There is romantic tension between Henry, Vicki and Mike Celluci; Vicki's former police partner and sometime lover.

When Henry friends (wearwolves) need some detective skills, Henry gets Vicki to help out. The Blood Trail series formula is a mystery (initiated by one of the main characters), introduction of a supernatural event / character and rivalry between the guys over Vicki and a sexual triss to add spice.

Narrator made it hard to listen to

Having read all the series years ago I was excited for the audible version. I had to stop listening though- the narrator made all the voices breathy and shrill. She made Vicki sound like she alternated only between whiny or hysterical throughout the book. It was too much for me. I'm sad and disappointed- I've loved these books for the 20 years. I will have to re-read rather than listen.

I don't get how the author can be so progressive..

and yet write a character like Mike Seluchi (Celuchi?) as a romance option. And how is a 450 year old vampire more progressive then a modern day cop? I will never like his character, he's just so grating.

Otherwise this was a wonderful quarantine time sink. I love how forward thinking the author is, speaking on police brutality (though only briefly) and having a lesbian couple (though again, only briefly). It's really nice to see.

I highly recommend this one guys, only gave it four stars because of heckin overbearing Mike. :)

OK, but mostly annoying and creepy

I felt a bit ambiguous after reading the first book in the series so I decided to give this second book a try. I won't be reading more.

The story was OK, but very predictable with nothing really interesting or fun enough to overcome that issue. The characters are OK, but not likeable enough to make me want to hear another book about them. There was also a strong incest related portion of the storyline that I found really creepy. It was related to animals somewhat so maybe it shouldn’t have bothered me, but it still just made me cringe every time it came up.

The narration was also a problem for me. The narrator did a decent job technically – she enunciated well (though almost too well in places so it sounded forced), did a reasonable job of differentiating the characters and varied her tone and cadence to keep from sounding boring. I just couldn’t stand listening to her voice.

To be fair, maybe it’s just my personal preference, but she has a quavering, almost “old lady” quality much of the time, which made the characters all sound whiney and angry. I read paritally to escape real life frustrations so I hate listening to a bunch of whiney, angry people for hours on end. I think the author meant for the main character to come across that way to some degree (she’d been through a lot of loss and change and wasn’t adapting well), but the narrator’s voice made all the characters sound that way and it annoyed me so much that I just couldn’t get into the book.

This certainly wasn’t the worst book or narration, but I didn’t enjoy it.

Insufferable

I found this old TV show on one of my streaming apps, so when I realized it was a book series I went straight to Audible. As soon as they had a sale I bought all 6 books. The first book was tolerable, but as much as I've tried I cannot make it through the second book t and, unfortunately, Audible only refunds books bought with a credit, so I'm stuck with these.

The narration is brutal. Her voice is terribly nasal and there's another awful quality that I can't describe, although another reviewer described it as "shaky" and "old," so maybe that's it.

The premise was great (right up my alley) and I really wanted to like it, but the main character has just become an obnoxious, third-wave feminist, preachy, self-righteous, White Knight saviour. 🤮 It's impossible to become invested in a story when the main character is so thoroughly unlikable - especially with such an awful narrator - so I'm throwing in the towel. :(
