Former Texas Rangers Benton McCaleb, Will Elliot, and Brazos Gifford ride with Charles Goodnight as he rounds up thousands of ornery, unbranded cattle for the long drive to Colorado. From the Trinity River brakes to Denver, they’ll battle endless miles of flooded rivers, parched desert, and whiskey-crazed Comanches. And come face-to-face with Judge Roy Bean and legendary gunslingers like Clay Allison. For McCaleb and his hard-riding crew, the drive is a fierce struggle against the perils of an untamed land. Holt’s latest job is in Devil’s Gulch in Colorado Territory. But wiping out bands of bank robbers is just the beginning. More disorder is brewing, and the skittish mayor has handpicked Holt as the new sheriff. Holt is what the town needs: a mercenary with a badge, a loaded Remington, and a deadeye-aim for trouble. Devil’s Gulch has the vigilance committee. The man behind it—Joe Mullen, the largest rancher and mine owner in the valley—isn’t keen on an outsider like Holt muscling in on a good thing. Mullen already has his hand in all the crime in Devil’s Gulch.

Once a respected lawman in Kansas and Oklahoma, Ty Brannigan ended his career as town marshal of Warknife while he was still young enough to marry, start a family, and raise cattle. Now nearly sixty, he’s a proud husband, father of four, and proprietor of the Powderhorn Ranch. He’s more content wrangling cows than criminals. But for every outlaw Brannigan put in jail, noosed, or left to the vultures, he made even more enemies. They’ve made the mistake of targeting his wife and children—only to discover that Ty Brannigan enforces his own law with a lightning-fast draw.

The great state of Texas is a land of opportunity. For outlaws. And horse thieves. And cattle rustlers. Not to mention bank robbers, train robbers, and anything-that-ain’t-nailed-down robbers. The state’s governor, Richard B. Hubbard, is at the end of his rope. He wants to clean up Texas once and for all—and he’s desperate enough to try something crazy: hire a man who can do what the Texas Rangers can’t. A man not tied down by a wife or children. Or rules. Who’s not afraid to go outside the law.

Blood Lands by Ralph Cotton
In Blood Lands, Ralph Cotton weaves a tale of frontier justice. Set at the end of the Civil War, in the Kansas and Colorado territories, this story illustrates how a few corrupt men took advantage of the rights to bear arms and form militias during a time of national unrest. This story has villains, and it has heroes. It has unspeakable crimes, and it has poetic frontier justice. This is a fun read! The characters are believable, and the plot is masterful!

gripping story
When I was looking up books that won the Pulitzer Prize or were candidates for the Pulitzer I came across the name of Ralph Cotton. Mr. Cotton was a candidate for the Pulitzer Prize in 1994 for the book “While Angel’s Dance”. I was surprised to find a man who is known as a prolific western writer to be on the Pulitzer list. He also writes in the fiction genre. I looked on Audible for books they have by Cotton and chose “Blood Lands” primarily because the protagonist is a women. The book begins toward the end of the Civil War with a band of outlaws who use the Union cause to justify their atrocities. Cotton takes time to introduce the readers to the main characters, drawing a clear line between good and bad. Action scenes come at regular intervals and are tough and brutal. Although this plot is not a new one in westerns; it is interesting to see the changes in the Julie Wilder (who is beaten, raped and her father and ranch hand killed) goes through, her life before she is attacked, her fear of her perpetrator, and then finding the strength and courage to face them. This book is also a bit different in that the gun fighter plays only a secondary role in the story. The book is very well written and Cotton proves to be an interesting storyteller. Joel Leffert does a good job narrating the book. The book makes a nice change from more serious reading. If you enjoy western you will enjoy this book.

Gritty,Action packed adult western.
Where does Blood Lands rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?
Blood Lands is one of the best audiobooks I have listened to so far well acted believeable characters it was like a tell out of the old west. After the war between the states. With men geedy with power and violence ruled the day. Stopped by a woman who found the carriage and strength for revenge.
What was one of the most memorable moments of Blood Lands?
For me it was when Jewely finely got her justice for all the violents, rapes ,assauits and the murder of her father and his friend.
Have you listened to any of Joel Leffert’s other performances before? How does this one compare?
No I have not.
Who was the most memorable character of Blood Lands and why?
Planter because he maide you wont to kill him yourself.
