Clark's story highlights Indiana's long and dark history of the enslavement of African-Americans. This historical fiction though gives a intriguing look, even if fictionalized, behind the names in court records and histories. The author brings to life the characters, their personal histories, struggles, and triumphs. This is an excellent book, even though chapter 8 seems uncharacteristically and painfully detailed.
