Acerca de esta escucha

Born during the mid-1940s in rural Maryland, brown-skinned Cassidy Webster lived through a childhood marked by instability and poverty. Her parents were often estranged. Her father drank to excess. Her mother was worn down by worry about providing for six daughters.

Cassidy never doubted that she could overcome racism, gender bias, poverty, and other hurdles and rise in the world. Embracing the American Dream whole cloth, she forged ahead. Over the years, she advanced professionally, gaining many of the trappings associated with the Dream.

Along the way, she married a White American man, and they had a son. Both her husband and child became secondary characters in her life as she devoted herself to her career. During these years, she remained close to her mother and maintained fleeting contact with her sisters. After following this pattern for decades, she questioned her choices when sudden misfortune entered her life.

Unflinchingly honest and often heart wrenching, Black Girl in Red, White, and Blue America is as inspiring in its own way as was Bryan's first book, a running memoir titled Saving Myself One Step at a Time, which received rave reviews from readers who, based on this single work, often stated that they would read anything that she wrote.
