The story

Now, Runar Skoldolfr and Tiberius Grim must lead a small expedition into the haunted vales of the Blood-Rock Peaks to answer the girl’s pleas for aid. There, the hunter and the veteran priest of Sigmar will uncover the enigma of a forlorn-looking statue and its curious sway over the town – a place ruled by ancient fear and phobia, zealotry and madness.

Separated and isolated, Runar and Tiberius will learn there are far worse fates than death, for in Calignius friendships turn sour, faith boils into anguish, and long-buried nightmares rise up from the shadows. If they are to survive, they will need to find a way to unite against the daemons that divide them.

Intriguing beginning and action-packed end. Reasonably complex characters and well-done madness. Watch out for the Bats!

good ideas but so slow

I like Dale Lucas but this is not a good representation of his writing. the beginning starts out well and the premise and twist (if you can call it that) are interesting. however it felt like he was told the book had to be so many pages or something. mid point of the book became a slog and honestly I zoned out a few times and realized that I hadn't missed anything. the books slow burn to an end is made all the more confusing because the end is so abrupt and an epilogue seems to undo everything.

this was my first foray into the age of sigmar books and I hope the rest are more akin to the 40k stuff. I would not recommend this book.

Solid addition to the series, with some odd points

Very much enjoyed the previous Gothgul Hollow and Briardark books, and they would get a solid 4.5-5 if I were to review them fairly (but it has been a year or more since, so I can't).

This book is a little odd. As other reviewers have said, it starts off very good and then descends somewhat into what feels like a word count requirement. I feel as though the "twist" could have been revealed several chapters/hours earlier and the book could have been probably nearly a quarter of it's length shorter. I, like several other reviewers found myself listening to this at work and zoning out of both my work and the book, and needing to go back 10-15 minutes in order to reorient myself slightly.

Story is overall solid, and I do very much love the companionship and bond that the two protagonists share, while nearly losing because they are both afflicted by the mentioned malaise.

The narrator is a little dry, but listenable overall but does have some quirks such as odd pauses between strings of descriptions and lists of items, and then no pause where it's clearly a change of POV or a new paragraph. I would struggle to listen to a Horus Heresy book delivered by him.

Overall if you like the series and really want to keep supporting it, you should probably get this and give it a go, but if it's just to pass time you probably wouldn't be missing much overall in comparison to the previous titles.

Intriguing Beginning, Slog to the End

Really intersting beginning that turns into a slog (you can feel the shift from a well-told story to the need to reach a word limit). Also, some of the characters make truly unbelievably stupid decisions (such as a priest of Sigmar not calling on Sigmar!). I finished the listen just to do so. If you've got a credit and nothing else to listen to, maybe give this a go. (Narrator was good, but its artificially inflating the review score so I had to lower it).
