Another is one of only three men to become an ACE in World War II, credited with shooting down aircraft in all theaters from all Axis nations: Italy, Germany, and Japan. He is also the only American flier to ever be highly decorated for shooting down an American aircraft in combat. Yet another Indiana pilot is the only man in history to received the Air Force’s highest combat decoration the Air Force Cross, three times.
